{"id":197369,"date":"2024-05-10T14:32:06","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T00:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=197369"},"modified":"2024-05-10T14:32:06","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T00:32:06","slug":"uh-west-oahu-student-housing-interest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/10\/uh-west-oahu-student-housing-interest\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu explores student housing interest"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc.jpg\" alt=\"u h west oahu campus\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-122992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/west-oahu-campus-gnrc-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> is exploring the need for and interest in student residence halls, and is conducting a market study, including a survey of current students from April 29 to May 17.<\/p>\n<p>The survey by <a href=\"https:\/\/scionadvisory.com\/\">Scion Advisory Group<\/a> will identify student interest in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>-based housing, demand by bed or unit type, unit mix and sizes, desired amenities, and pricing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/sciongroupadvisory.ca1.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_0xr7sc2aXCKTdoG__;!!PvDODwlR4mBZyAb0!WU-fNRKevgJhF_hBZwwNDCHDafT-dSynNWuRjjb384SGlTXUy7Zg2ONjnlgQfKJShtzSg75TUM6TavcVRIaCWg$\">Take the survey<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Campus residence halls provide many benefits to the university and the local community,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Vice Chancellor for Administration David McDonald. &ldquo;For students, residence halls increase student learning, enhance connections to the campus, improve interpersonal skill development, and provide immediate access to campus resources and activities. For the community, students living in a university village environment reduces the number of students who have to commute to campus, increases the number of participants in local community activities, and on-campus students support local businesses. For the university, students living on campus increase the vibrancy and energy of all university activities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> currently does not have residence halls. However, dormitory space for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students is available through a partnership with neighbor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.htic.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Tokai International College<\/a>. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s spring enrollment was 2,863.<\/p>\n<p>The location being considered for housing is within the University Village at the <span aria-label=\"Hoomohala\">Ho&#699;omohala<\/span> Avenue gateway to campus, near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.gov\/transportation\/divisions\/mobility\/rail-operations.html\">Skyline<\/a>\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Keoneae\">Keone&#699;ae<\/span> transit station. The Skyline connects <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students to goods and services along the rail line, and provides a connection to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> campus. The planned next phase of the Skyline connecting <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to the airport makes this location even more advantageous for students who would live in this new residence hall.<\/p>\n<p>The study is based on a 300-bed minimum.
