The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/aanapisi\/\">TIDES program<\/a>, which provides support to students identifying as Filipino or Pacific Islander, hosted its first &ldquo;Turning the Tides&rdquo; transfer event. The program\u2019s goal is to help ease the transition from community college to a four-year institution for Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander (<abbr>AANAPISI<\/abbr>) students.<\/p>\n<p>For Davis Rofino Martin, a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa junior and TIDES Fellow who helped organize the event, the importance of the inaugural gathering was personal. He once made the same journey from Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> to M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As someone who has gone through the transfer experience myself, I know what it\u2019s like to endure the culture shock while trying to adapt to a larger campus environment,&rdquo; Martin said. &ldquo;This event was a way to offer these students an opportunity to get their feet wet and get them connected with resources and a community even before their arrival as official <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Cultural weaving, tailored tours<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-197112\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-tides-2.jpg\" alt=\"people standing in line\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-197112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-tides-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-tides-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-197112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Transfer students enjoy a tailored campus tour, visiting specific locations based on their interests.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The day&#8217;s agenda was rich with activities tailored to the students&#8217; interests and needs. From a weaving workshop to a presentation of the Hamilton Library&#8217;s Pacific Collection, the event aimed to provide insight into campus life. Specialized tours focused on the students\u2019 specific academic interests. A panel discussion featured current <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students who had transferred from community colleges, sharing their personal experiences and advice.<\/p>\n<p>Participants who attended are primarily from student organizations at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>; <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/hawaii.edu\/micronesianwayfinders\/home\">Micronesian Wayfinders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kapionews.com\/index.php\/2023\/09\/07\/pasefika-club-perpetuates-pacific-islander-culture-values\/\">Pasefika club<\/a> and other programs such as Phi Theta Kappa, TRIO and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/services\/hawaiian-center\/hui-oiwi-hawaiian-club\/\">Hui <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> Hawaiian Club<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Seeing students from Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> engaging with each other and asking about our experiences in transferring to M\u0101noa was rewarding,&rdquo; said senior Jeddie May Cabasag, a TIDES student assistant who helped organize the event.<\/p>\n<p>The attendees come from diverse cultural backgrounds and identified as Chuukese, Chamorro, Marshallese, Yapese, Palauan, Kosraean, Samoan, Tongan, Native Hawaiian, Tahitian and Filipino.The event also hosted a resource fair which showcased an array of support services available on campus, from first generation and Filipino\/Pacific Islander-serving clubs to information about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/transfer\/kaieie\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kaieie\">Ka&#699;ie&#699;ie<\/span> degree pathway program<\/a> for transfer students.<\/p>\n<h2>More on TIDES<\/h2>\n<p>TIDES, housed under the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u02bbs <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/studentsuccess\/\">Division of Student Success<\/a>, was established in 2021 through an Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander (<abbr>AANAPISI<\/abbr>) grant.
