This five-year fellowship will cover tuition and provide a stipend at any eligible graduate program for which the awardee is selected.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_196827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-196827\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-arl-ian-robertson-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"man using a drill\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-196827\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-arl-ian-robertson-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-arl-ian-robertson-2-98x130.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-arl-ian-robertson-2.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-196827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robertson built a mount for a GoPro to capture video footage of the breaking waves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Joining <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, Ian Robertson became involved with the Rapid Resilient Reefs for Coastal Defense (<abbr>R3D<\/abbr>) project. One of his contributions to the project was the development of a cutting-edge machine learning algorithm aimed at characterizing how waves break over artificial structures. His work has helped to advance the understanding of wave dynamics and holds promise for improving coastal defense strategies.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I started at <abbr>ARL<\/abbr>, I had limited hands-on experience in oceanography despite my math degree,&rdquo; said Robertson. &ldquo;However, over the past three years, I&#8217;ve had the opportunity to work on various projects and pick up invaluable skills.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Robertson is continuing his education through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program by pursuing a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in physical oceanography.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Collaborating with experts in different fields has been instrumental in my research journey,&rdquo; Robertson said. &ldquo;Working with colleagues from ocean engineering, marine biology, and various institutions has been eye-opening. It&#8217;s essential to bridge the gap between scientists and engineers to develop holistic solutions to complex oceanographic challenges.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More on <abbr>R3D<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162289\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/system-extramural-funding-record-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"cages with coral growing out of them\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-162289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/system-extramural-funding-record-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/system-extramural-funding-record-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/system-extramural-funding-record.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> will develop an engineered coral reef ecosystem to protect coastlines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>ARL<\/abbr> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is leading the development of a hybrid coral reef that is designed to protect coastal infrastructure from flooding, erosion and storm damage. The goal of this project is to provide alternatives to coastline hardening solutions, such as traditional breakwaters, jetties or sea walls, with a nature-based solution that incorporates a living ecosystem with a wave-attenuating base structure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Coral reefs are in a dire state worldwide and the impact goes beyond the losses of beaches and coastal property,&rdquo; said <abbr>R3D<\/abbr> Principal Investigator Ben Jones. &ldquo;These losses negatively affect local economies and Indigenous communities throughout the Pacific who have subsisted off reefs for generations. Ian\u2019s research will help us understand the nature of the waves breaking near our hybrid reef and will ensure that we can reestablish a thriving, diverse coral reef community in areas where degraded reefs currently persist.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>ARL<\/abbr> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is partnering with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/ore\/\">Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering<\/a> as well as a local industry partner, Makai Ocean Engineering, to develop this living breakwater that can reduce wave energy, encourage coral settlement and growth, and survive marine heatwaves.
