It was part of Grewal\u2019s first speech to <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> faculty and staff at the four-day, state of the college conference in April 2024.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s inclusive vision is to secure the future of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> through collaborative innovation and merging the Western, Asian, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian knowledge systems,&rdquo; said Grewal, adding that local self sufficiently has to happen while also, &ldquo;enhancing the health of Hawaiian ecosystems, families and communities through research, teaching and cooperative Extension.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Grewal also focused on the challenges in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> that <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> research and extension can help address including <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> energy supply, with more than 80&#37; of the energy being imported (mostly as oil); <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> food supply with 85&#8211;90&#37; of our food being imported; and food security with 11&#37; of families and 1 in 6 children facing food insecurity in the state.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_196339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-196339\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-ctahr-student-success-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students at desks\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-196339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-ctahr-student-success-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-ctahr-student-success-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-ctahr-student-success.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-196339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> students using the lounge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We can help develop ag stations as hubs of prosperity by establishing sustainable production systems with locally relevant food, feed, forage, fiber, floriculture, timber, seed production, livestock, swine, and small ruminant (sheep, goat) production,&rdquo; said Grewal.<\/p>\n<p>Grewal also discussed <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>\u2019s student enrollment trends over the past five years. Student numbers have declined since the <abbr title=\"coronavirus\">COVID-19<\/abbr> pandemic, however programs such as natural resources and environmental management, molecular biosciences and bioengineering and more are trending upward. In the past three years <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> students have also been awarded &#36;780,618 in scholarships to support student success.
