(Photo credit: Polynesian Voyaging Society)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Master navigator Nainoa Thompson was presented with the Honorary Geographer award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aag.org\/\">American Association of Geographers<\/a> (<abbr>AAG<\/abbr>) at its annual meeting in Honolulu on April 16. This award recognizes excellence in research, teaching or writing on geographic topics by non-geographers. He also studied astronomy with Will Kyselka, Bishop Museum Planetarium lecturer. Thompson\u2019s first journey was in 1980 when he guided the <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> a traditional double-hulled canoe, from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to Tahiti.<\/p>\n<p>Currently serving as the <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Thompson continues to pass down knowledge to future generations, emphasizing the importance of navigation and voyaging.
