Brandon Aultman)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa researchers participated in the kick-off meeting for the <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko Resilience Review project, a community-focused analysis of the potential impacts of climate change on the physical, natural and man-made infrastructure in <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko, a section of Windward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> stretching between Kualoa and Waim&#257;nalo. The event was hosted by the Marine Corps Base <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the project, participants from the <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko area&#8212;including community-based organizations, neighborhood boards members, and representatives from the Honolulu City Council, State Legislature and other city, state and federal agencies&#8212;will work to identify actions that can be taken to address current and future climate-related risks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_195698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-195698\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-soest-koolau-poko-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"windward oahu\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-195698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-soest-koolau-poko-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-soest-koolau-poko-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-soest-koolau-poko.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-195698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shoreline in <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;As global temperature continues to rise from our fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions, it supercharges extreme weather events and drives unrelenting stresses from sea level rise and hotter ambient air temperature,&rdquo; said Chip Fletcher, interim dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/crc\/\">Climate Resilience Collaborative<\/a> (<abbr>CRC<\/abbr>). &ldquo;All of these effects will require new and unique responses from our communities. The purpose of this meeting was to hear <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko community concerns and fold them into developing resilience responses to build a safer tomorrow.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>New data for adaptation solutions<\/h2>\n<p>Over the next year, new climate hazard and impact data will be used to help identify potential climate adaptation solutions for the <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> Poko region. Climate adaptation means proactively preparing for and adapting to the impacts of our changing climate. The <a href=\"https:\/\/oldcc.gov\/our-programs\/installation-resilience\">program<\/a> provides the opportunity for local governments and the community to partner with local military installations in addressing resilience challenges and opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The effort is bolstered by two advisory groups guiding the progress of the project: a technical advisory group, composed of professional, cultural, and subject area experts, and a steering committee of community members and government officials and staff.
