The entire decommissioning process is expected to be completed by 2024 and will cost <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> more than $4 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final decommissioning phase<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete interior deconstruction and removal of the observatory dome<\/li>\n<li>Remove foundation and the cesspool, its remaining solid contents, and all underground utilities<\/li>\n<li>Sample ground underneath the foundation and cesspool for chemicals of potential concern<\/li>\n<li>Monitor site for the appearance of invasive species<\/li>\n<li>Restore land to the fullest extent consistent with the permits guiding the decommissioning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_195381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-195381\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-hilo-cso-demo-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Parts of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory being removed.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-195381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-hilo-cso-demo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-hilo-cso-demo-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/uh-hilo-cso-demo.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-195381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crews remove parts of the CSO telescope in September 2023.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> said that there are monitors for all phases of the project, including decommissioning, cultural, construction and archeological monitors, in accordance with the permits guiding the telescope\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Once the decommissioning is complete, the site will be monitored for three years, primarily to document repopulation by flora and fauna,&rdquo; said Caltech physics professor and <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> Director Sunil Golwala.<\/p>\n<p>The decommissioning is expected to be completed this year. Deconstruction and site restoration costs are being funded primarily by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> telescope removal is made possible by the Heising-Simons Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Regular updates will be provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cso.caltech.edu\/wiki\/cso\/outreach\/outreach\">CSO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>H&#333;k&#363; <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The removal of the H&#333;k&#363; <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> Observatory on the summit of Maunakea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/08\/removal-of-maunakea-observatory-to-begin\/\">will begin the week of April 15<\/a>.
