Âé¶¹´«Ã½students\u2019 robot design heads to international showdown\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>A team of undergraduate students from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa is one step closer to a potential deployment of its robotic rover to explore Mars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"small rover type machine\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-195034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Team Robotic Space Exploration&rdquo; (Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr>) is headed to Utah in late May to compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/urc.marssociety.org\/home\">University Rover Challenge<\/a>&#8212;the world&#8217;s premier robotics competition for college students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The team was in awe of the results, but is greatly motivated to improve upon our designs to be prepared for competition in Utah,&rdquo; said lead systems integrator and <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> student Jack Saito. &ldquo;With less than 60 days left, the team is hoping to guarantee the success of our systems and eliminate any risks with thorough and persistent testing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After submitting a preliminary design and system acceptance review, the group was one of 38 teams selected to participate in the final round. More than 100 teams entered the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The entire team was ecstatic with the results knowing all the hard work and dedication had paid off; including all members from the past three years,&rdquo; said project manager and mechanical engineering student Micah Chang. &ldquo;It\u2019s a great privilege for Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr> to participate in this magnificent event, and the team is excited for this opportunity to interact with peers and professionals from around the globe.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Mission to Mars<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"small rover type machine\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-195035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-engineering-mars-rover-challenge2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University Rover Challenge challenges teams to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers that may one day work alongside astronauts exploring the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>Rovers will compete in four missions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science mission to investigate a site for the presence of life<\/li>\n<li>Delivery mission to deliver a variety of objects to astronauts in the field across rugged terrain<\/li>\n<li>Equipment servicing mission to perform dexterous operations on a mock lander using a robotic arm<\/li>\n<li>Autonomous navigation mission to autonomously travel to a series of locations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m so incredibly proud and impressed by the achievements of this highly motivated group of students,&rdquo; said Frances Zhu, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> assistant researcher and the team\u2019s advisor. &ldquo;This undergraduate team formed just three years ago during the pandemic and now they are competing on the international stage.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the third time our <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa team has entered this very prestigious competition and the first time they were selected,&rdquo; said Trevor Sorensen, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsfl.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory<\/a> specialist\/project manager and the team\u2019s advisor. &ldquo;Their teamwork and engineering skills are very impressive and I believed that this team would succeed. It consists of a faculty mentor, graduate student researchers and undergraduates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Robotic Space Exploration is an ideal example of a <abbr>VIP<\/abbr> team,&rdquo; said Aaron Ohta, <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a> professor and <abbr>VIP<\/abbr> program director. &ldquo;They are a multidisciplinary group of extremely talented and motivated students.
