Nearly 100 guests attended the ceremony, featuring a program of k\u016bkulukumuhana (pooling of energy) and m\u016b ka waha (sharing silence with intention) to welcome each <span aria-label=\"kiai\">kia&#699;i<\/span> into the community and campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it\u2019s a beautiful representation of our future,&rdquo; <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student <span aria-label=\"Haliaaloha\">Hali&#699;aaloha<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Maele\">Ma&#699;ele<\/span>-Ramos said. &ldquo;N&#257; Kia\u2018i o Kapolei&rdquo; artist Jessica Kay Bodner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sculpture by artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jessicakaybodner.com\/\">Jessica Kay Bodner<\/a> is the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfca.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Foundation on Culture and the Arts\u2019<\/a> (<abbr>SFCA<\/abbr>) latest <a href=\"https:\/\/sfca.hawaii.gov\/art-in-public-places-program\/\">Art in Public Places Program<\/a> installation.<\/p>\n<p>Bodner said &ldquo;N&#257; <span aria-label=\"Kiai\">Kia&#699;i<\/span>&rdquo; represents guardians and the six Hawaiian Islands served by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to her, but are really open to interpretation by the viewer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They are abstract in nature, giving the viewer their own inspiration and ideas as to what it means to them personally, possibly opening up avenues for dialogue and learning,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It is my hope that these <span aria-label=\"kiai\">kia&#699;i<\/span> serve as a beacon and landmark for the campus community for many years to come.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The sculptures, inspired by <span aria-label=\"anuu\">anu&#699;u<\/span> (Hawaiian oracle towers), are made of woven stainless steel and are painted to reflect the volcanic red dirt characteristic of the region.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are very fortunate to commission an artist who could create such meaningful work of art for this space,&rdquo;
