Growing up, Harman learned many Hawaiian chants and songs, which propelled him to learn <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, to gain a better understanding.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was especially interested in hula,&rdquo; Harman said. &ldquo;[That] inspired me to learn the language further so that I could understand what I was chanting, what I was singing, and what I was dancing about.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194626\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hilo-harman-k-3.jpg\" alt=\"man wearing lei\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-194626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hilo-harman-k-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/hilo-harman-k-3-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kekoa Harman (Photo credit: Cody Yamaguchi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After high school, he continued Hawaiian language at then Maui Community College and earned an associate in arts degree. Hungry for more, Harman came to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo, which continues to be recognized for its crucial role in the revitalization and advancement of Hawaiian language. He would go on to secure a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in Hawaiian studies and <abbr title=\"master of arts\">MA<\/abbr> in Indigenous language and culture education and doctorate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/en\/khuok\/mokunakalaiike\/mulipuka\/laeula\">philosophy in Hawaiian and Indigenous language and culture revitalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Much more than a degree<\/h2>\n<p>The Maui native now calls <span aria-label=\"Keaau\">Kea&#699;au<\/span> home and is thankful to be a kumu <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/en\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> o <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span><\/a> College of Hawaiian Language. He recognizes teaching <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s mother tongue extends much farther than the Hilo campus.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a large community when we talk about the Hawaiian language movement, when we look at the preschool all the way up to the college level right here in East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. We are a part of something that\u2019s much more than just a degree or a Hawaiian language course. We are part of a movement, part of a community,&rdquo; Harman said.<\/p>\n<p>Harman is <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s representative for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/hawaiipapaokeao\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Papa O Ke Ao<\/a>, a program tasked to create activities in support of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> being a leader in Indigenous education across all 10 campuses across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system. He\u02bbs also a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/uhh\/hanakahi\/\">Hanakahi Council<\/a>&#8212;a campus-based group of faculty and staff who are Native Hawaiian or associated with Native Hawaiian programs.
