The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sustainability\/\">Office of Sustainability<\/a> plan incorporates <abbr>PV<\/abbr> over parking structures, walkways, rooftops and throughout buildings across the M&#257;noa campus. The ambitious project will have a phased build-up plan spanning two decades.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This <abbr>PV<\/abbr> plan is another crucial step in promoting sustainability at the university,&rdquo; said Jan Gouviea, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President of Administration, who oversees the Office of Sustainability. &ldquo;We are developing a well-thought-out plan, ensuring that the university&#8217;s construction aligns with academic and environmental objectives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194131\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"solar rendering\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-194131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sakamaki Hall solar plan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The proposal, part of a larger strategic energy management plan, aims to meet <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s net-zero energy goal by 2035 and serve as a model for other institutions and the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> which has set a 2045 100&#37; renewable energy mandate on our public utility. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> plan incorporates solar panels, batteries and efficiency measures to  generate clean energy in a way that aligns with the university&#8217;s long-range development plan (<abbr>LRDP<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Previous projects include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/31\/parking-canopy-project-net-zero\/\"><abbr>PV<\/abbr> canopy project<\/a> on the M&#257;noa lower campus parking structure, which was completed in two phases. The phase 2 parking structure was energized in September 2019, and the phase 1 parking structure was recently energized in December 2023. As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/09\/06\/pv-umbrellas-shade-power-at-life-sciences\/\">five <abbr>PV<\/abbr> powered umbrella, table and bench systems<\/a> that were installed in the Life Sciences Building courtyard and on the building, and most recently the rooftop array featured atop Bachman hall energized in January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Currently there are five more projects in various stages of construction including Gyms 1 and 2, Law School, Law Library, Sakamaki Hall and the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture is fully permitted and will commence construction this summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194132\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-194132\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"solar rendering\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-194132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-sustainability-solar-campus-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-194132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Administrative Services Building solar plan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;This plan is a key in securing permits from the Department of Permitting and Planning, which allows us to be as prepared as possible so we can execute on projects once the funding is available,&rdquo; said Topping. &ldquo;Disconnected from imported fossil fuels is a matter of urgency and we feel <abbr>UH<\/abbr> must help lead the way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Developing this plan required a meticulous process, involving campus stakeholders, environmental assessments, while balancing the need for renewable energy with preserving essential elements on campus such as trees and historic buildings.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> has requested &#36;20 million each year as a capital improvement line item from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/hrscurrent\/vol05_Ch0261-0319\/HRS0304A\/HRS_0304A-0119.htm\">net-zero mandate<\/a> for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> placed by the legislature. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> has also reached out to the federal government for community directed spending, and partnered with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Energy Office to pursue funding opportunities through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes the tax credits that could help offset costs.
