(Photo credit: Instagram colebraueroceanracing)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The native of East Hampton, New York, finished second out of 16 competitors in the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalsolochallenge.com\/\">Global Solo Challenge<\/a>, a race that started and ended in A Coru&#241;a, Spain. The marathon 30,000 mile journey took 130 days, and she crossed the finish line on March 7.<\/p>\n<p>Brauer started the competition on October 29, sailing south around Africa, over to Australia, crossing the Pacific Ocean to South America before returning north to Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Brauer was the only woman and youngest competitor in the race. It has been a grueling competition so far as more than half have dropped out. Brauer also had to overcome massive challenges, including injuring her rib after being thrown around by a massive wave, and becoming severely dehydrated. Brauer has been chronicling her journey via her Instagram <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/colebraueroceanracing\/?hl=en\">@colebraueroceanracing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As she was pulling up to the finish line, Brauer recorded a live video on Instagram. She thanked her followers and said, &ldquo;I can\u2019t believe it. I still feel like I\u2019ve got another couple months left of this craziness. &#8230;I\u2019m really stoked. I\u2019m really stoked to be here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Brauer said that her mother hopped on a nearby boat to accompany her daughter through the finish.<\/p>\n<h2>Success at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193460\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-athletics-sailing-cole-brauer-jack-bonham-award-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two people holding awards\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-193460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-athletics-sailing-cole-brauer-jack-bonham-award-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-athletics-sailing-cole-brauer-jack-bonham-award-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-athletics-sailing-cole-brauer-jack-bonham-award.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">K\u016bpono Fey and Brauer were named the 2017 Jack Bonham Award winners.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Brauer experienced much success at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, being named the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiathletics.com\/news\/2017\/4\/17\/mens-volleyball-brauer-fey-named-2017-bonham-award-winners.aspx\">2017 Jack Bonham Award winner<\/a>, which is considered the most prestigious award in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> athletics. At <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, she became a member of three national championship-qualifying teams and was a two-time Intercollegiate Sailing Association Academic All-American Team member. Brauer was selected to the Dean\u2019s List from 2013 to 16 and was the sailing team\u2019s top scholar-athlete in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>During her time at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, Brauer worked as a tutor at the Learning Assistance Center and served as a teaching assistant for the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/education\/departments\/anatomy\/\">Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology<\/a>. As a member of the Food Science and Human Nutrition Club, she helped feed the homeless. With the Food Science Council, she participated in festivals teaching children about nutrition.
