{"id":19332,"date":"2013-09-04T17:08:20","date_gmt":"2013-09-05T03:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=19332"},"modified":"2020-08-20T16:41:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-21T02:41:22","slug":"uh-manoa-urged-to-move-with-aloha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/09\/04\/uh-manoa-urged-to-move-with-aloha\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa urged to Move with Aloha"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sfnvBURcuzU\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> is asking students, faculty and staff to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/movewithaloha\/\">Move with Aloha<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have lots of areas where we have lots of pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, people on all different kinds of ways to move around,&rdquo; said <strong>Crysttal Steiner<\/strong>, the transportation demand coordinator at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. &ldquo;And we need to get along and be respectful and careful with each other.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You know, kind of pay attention to the other people around, and maybe get off your bicycle or skateboard so you don&#8217;t run into someone,&rdquo; agreed <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa graduate student <strong>Tom Robinson<\/strong>. &ldquo;It is really about being considerate to everyone on campus.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19358\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/move-with-aloha-parade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/move-with-aloha-parade.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/move-with-aloha-parade.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/move-with-aloha-parade-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa Band drumline took part in the Move with Aloha parade.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A number of organizations on campus co-sponsored the Move with Aloha Parade in the fall 2013 semester to raise campus awareness. Students say it is an important message. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It does need to be delivered,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa student <strong>Vernon Rayo<\/strong>. &ldquo;It just happened today, where I was startled by a skateboarder.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is really good because it is safe for them and for us,&rdquo; said fellow student <strong>Ashley Belen<\/strong>. &ldquo;So if they pass by us, they would stop, so we don&#8217;t get injured.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>It is not just about pedestrians possibly getting struck. There are also concerns of cars hitting bicyclists and skateboarders while on campus or around campus. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We just want to make sure everybody is safe but this is also really part of a bigger initiative to really find a way to green our transportation here,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Tom Apple<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Forty-three percent of the students, faculty and staff live within three miles of the M&#257;noa campus, and Steiner say that is a very commutable distance by bus, bike or foot. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You know, it is really good for your health. It&#8217;s great for the environment. It helps us with parking problems.
