The four-month program includes participation in the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> English Language Program, refining scientific writing skills, and active engagement with the East-West Center and <abbr>CSEAS<\/abbr> communities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are excited to host early career colleagues from Indonesia and Thailand this semester and engage with them on shared research interests,&rdquo; said Miriam Stark, director at <abbr>CSEAS<\/abbr>. &ldquo;We look forward to a fruitful visit and are grateful to the Henry Luce Foundation for this valuable opportunity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Navigating exchange<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193313\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-call-lucesea-program-scholars-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"2 woman and 1 man\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-193313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-call-lucesea-program-scholars-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-call-lucesea-program-scholars-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-call-lucesea-program-scholars.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, three of the visiting scholars from Indonesia and Thailand, Tansuda Jinai, Fatwa Faturachmat and Andi Vika Faradiba Muin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Visiting scholars Tansuda Jinai, Fatwa Faturachmat, Andi Vika Faradiba Muin and Khemrat Panpanich arrived at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>For Fatwa Faturachmat, who holds a master\u2019s degree from Hasanuddin University in Indonesia, the experience on the M\u0101noa campus has been eye-opening.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The differences between my home country\u2019s educational system and that of the United States are striking,&rdquo; Faturachmat said. &ldquo;Notably, the diversity among students in terms of race, background, and religion stands out. My decision to join this program is driven by a desire to enhance my skills as a research scholar, particularly in scientific writing for scholarly journals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Enriching cultural exchange<\/h2>\n<p>Last summer, eight <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students traveled to Thailand and Indonesia with the LuceSEA Field School, a program that explores the dynamic socioeconomic and environmental shifts in rural Southeast Asian societies. The experience culminated in a workshop at the Center for Khmer Studies in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Building on this collaboration, <abbr>CSEAS<\/abbr> invited the Southeast Asian Scholars for cultural exchange at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/geography.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department  of Geography and Environment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center<\/a>, Khon Kaen University and Universitas Hasanuddin, this initiative aims to create a vibrant and dynamic educational experience. It is part of the five-year &ldquo;LuceSEA Transitions: Environment, Society, and Change&rdquo; grant awarded to <abbr>CSEAS<\/abbr>.
