Several years after graduating from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa with a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/\">electrical engineering<\/a>, the Waik\u014dloa, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island local has returned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> as a new faculty member.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m very grateful for this opportunity to return back home,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;Everyone here has been really nice and helped me get settled in and I&#8217;ve had the chance to talk with people about possible research collaborations.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193228\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193228\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-daisy-green-lab-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person smiling in a lab with machines\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-193228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-daisy-green-lab-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-daisy-green-lab-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-daisy-green-lab.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daisy Green in a lab at <abbr>MIT<\/abbr>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2012 Kealakehe High School graduate was a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa regent scholar and graduated in three and a half years. While at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, Green cultivated her passion for being &ldquo;green&rdquo; and sustainable. She participated in an x96 project, working in the smart campus energy lab under the guidance of Professor Anthony Kuh.<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, she was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she earned a master\u2019s and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> degree in electrical engineering and computer science, and worked as a postdoctoral associate. Green\u2019s research focused on creating more energy efficient systems and better thermal control in buildings. She hopes her experiences and research interests in sustainability will help to create a clean energy future in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I want to do research that helps establish a more sustainable electric grid,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;While we&#8217;re transitioning to more clean energy, there\u2019s going to be more monitoring and control that&#8217;s required to ensure the stability and resilience of the grid.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Daisy has so much to offer the University as well as the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Engineering Dean Brennon Morioka. &ldquo;Not only is her expertise something that will help the State in achieving one of its very ambitious goals, being that of clean energy, but she will be also able to serve as a role model for many of our local students to help them envision what students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> can achieve while also encouraging them to consider careers right here at home.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Serving up aces, on and off the court<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_193230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-193230\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-tennis-daisy-green-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person with a racquet hitting a tennis ball\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-193230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-tennis-daisy-green-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-tennis-daisy-green-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/manoa-engineering-tennis-daisy-green.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-193230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daisy Green played tennis for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa from 2012&#8211;15.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During her time as a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student, Green was also a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiathletics.com\/sports\/womens-tennis\">Rainbow Wahine tennis team<\/a>, competing for three seasons from 2012&#8211;15. She said juggling both academics and athletics helped to refine her time-management skills and hopes to support her students, not just in academics and research, but also about life.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I definitely hope to be able to mentor students and help students find what path they want to take&#8212;especially in electrical engineering or other engineering fields,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;I want to give back to the many communities here which have also helped me along the way.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Family support<\/h2>\n<p>Green is grateful for the support from her parents, Stephen and Yuko. Stephen, who is a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> mechanical engineering alumnus, annually contributes to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to support students, and in 2018, he wrote a letter to President David Lassner expressing their appreciation of Daisy\u2019s <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Regents scholarship, which&#8212;along with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Presidential scholarship&#8212;supports <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students with a record of outstanding academic achievement.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/16\/father-thanks-uh-for-daughters-success\/\">A father thanks <abbr>UH<\/abbr> for daughter\u2019s continued success<\/a>, January 16, 2018<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My parents are great,&rdquo; Green said. &ldquo;They&#8217;re very supportive of anything that I wanted to pursue&#8212;both in terms of school and tennis. Since my dad graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, it\u2019s definitely a full circle moment.
