A University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> alumna, Tomimbang, 73, was a trailblazer in the Filipino community and a pioneer in radio and television in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Breaking barriers for local women, she hosted her own radio show on <abbr>KNDI<\/abbr> in her teens, interviewed international celebrities at <abbr>KITV<\/abbr>, launched the Morning News on <abbr>KHON<\/abbr> Channel 2, and founded her own production company, Emme Tomimbang Multi-Media Enterprises (EMME, Inc.), providing 20+ years of entertainment of &ldquo;Emme\u2019s Island Moments&rdquo; featuring <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s most well-known and inspiring characters and stories.<\/p>\n<p>She was the widow of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/03\/09\/in-memoriam-uh-mourns-the-passing-of-the-honorable-james-s-burns\/\">late Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Judge James S. Burns<\/a>, son of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Governor John A. Burns, after whom the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> medical school is named. <\/p>\n<h2>Pivotal educational experience, upbringing<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-tomimbang-emme-speaking.jpg\" alt=\"emme tomimbang speaking at mic\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-192244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-tomimbang-emme-speaking.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-tomimbang-emme-speaking-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on her educational journey, Tomimbang expressed gratitude for her time at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, a pivotal experience she cherished. She attended <a href=\"http:\/\/leeward.hawaii.edu\">Leeward Community College <\/a>and graduated from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, she was honored with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/05\/08\/distinguished-uh-alumni-honored\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards<\/a> in recognition of her outstanding alumni accomplishments, inspirational leadership and service to the university and the community. At the event, she was also presented with her associate in arts degree from Leeward <abbr title=\"community college\">CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>AA<\/abbr> degree means so much to me because those two years at Leeward really defined my life and got me to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, and got me through the <abbr>UH<\/abbr>. So I am grateful to the community college system,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Having gone to Leeward and going to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, a great institution with everything that armed me for who I am and what I have done in my life. I think that was the real prize.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Raised in the Kalihi-Palama area, Tomimbang is a proud graduate of Farrington High School. After her elementary school years in <span aria-label=\"Kakaako\">Kaka&#699;ako<\/span>, Tomimbang and her dad moved to Hotel and River St. where he had a second-hand appliance store.<\/p>\n<p>During her middle school years at Central Intermediate, Tomimbang learned to swim, socialize and began the formation of her young teenage life at Palama. She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/10\/15\/palama-settlement-to-honor-emme-tomimbang-and-francis-keala\/\">honored by Palama Settlement in 2015<\/a> as part of its annual Malama Palama Gala Fundraiser to support vital programs for the community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was at Palama where I learned how to socialize and I even attended my first dance there,&rdquo; Tomimbang said. &ldquo;Palama provided us a place of trust and continuity, and offered very important programs that helped to guide us later in life.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Dedication to philanthropy<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192248\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-hedges-tomimbang-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hedges and tomimbang\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-192248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-hedges-tomimbang-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-hedges-tomimbang-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-hedges-tomimbang.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-192248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Jerris Hedges with Tomimbang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her recent years were dedicated to philanthropy, establishing endowments and scholarships. At the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), she honored the Kahanamoku legacy with scholarships for Native Hawaiian students and created the Burns-Tomimbang scholarship for <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> medical students committed to serving the Filipino community.<\/p>\n<p>Tomimbang also gave back to her alma mater, Farrington High School, funding programs for aspiring Filipino doctors and nurses in rural areas, journalists, and nurses, leaving a lasting impact on those following in her footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Details regarding a memorial service for Tomimbang will be provided at a later date.
