Bolstering University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> research is crucial to maintaining UH<\/abbr>‘s prestigious R1 status (for institutions with very high research activity) and is a top priority, according to a poll of UH<\/abbr> Professional Assembly (UHPA<\/abbr>) faculty members to inform UH<\/abbr>\u2019s search for its next president.<\/p>\n

“UHPA<\/abbr> and UH<\/abbr> faculty both play key roles in setting high standards for quality research and teaching for the UH<\/abbr>, and recognize that the UH<\/abbr> is key to creating a better quality of life for Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> residents,” said Christian Fern, UHPA<\/abbr> executive director. “The poll results provide a snapshot of what faculty believe are important for the next UH<\/abbr> president as the search process by Â鶹´«Ã½Board of Regents gets underway.”<\/p>\n

The top three priorities identified by the UHPA<\/abbr> for the new president:<\/p>\n

  1. Providing more support for research to maintain the UH<\/abbr>\u2019s R1 institution status<\/li>\n
  2. Making public higher education more accessible for Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> school graduates<\/li>\n
  3. Elevating the prominence of the UH<\/abbr> within the state<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Additionally, faculty emphasize the need for:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Strengthening community colleges’ role within the UH<\/abbr> system<\/li>\n
    • Considering all roles within the system holistically<\/li>\n
    • Increasing accessibility of public higher education for Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> high school graduates<\/li>\n
    • Fostering an inclusive academic environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Respondents also raised concerns about declining enrollment rates, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring the importance of making education accessible. Fern noted, “We want to make sure these issues are front and center for the next UH<\/abbr> president.”<\/p>\n

      Furthermore, the poll assessed the understanding of academic institutions by the UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature. Results indicate a perceived lack of understanding, with respondents expressing reservations about both bodies’ grasp of academic integrity and freedom.<\/p>\n

      As the search progresses, the faculty’s input underscores the imperative for the incoming president to prioritize research, accessibility and understanding of academic values.<\/p>\n
