The groundbreaking display opened in February at the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/library\">James &#38; Abigail Campbell Library<\/a> and runs through June 16.<\/p>\n<p>The works of art featured in the exhibit draw upon both traditional Micronesian motifs and the multi-cultural environment of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The curators of &ldquo;7 Degrees North&rdquo; are Floyd K. Takeuchi, a writer and photographer who was born and raised in the Marshall Islands, and Margo Vitarelli, a teaching artist and museum educator who grew up on Palau.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/west-oahu-art-micronesia-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Shirts and woven baskets\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-192088\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/west-oahu-art-micronesia-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/west-oahu-art-micronesia-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/west-oahu-art-micronesia-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s a unique opportunity&#8230;for the community at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to get a feeling for the contemporary Micronesian community in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; Takeuchi said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the featured artists are Lissette Yamase of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia (<abbr>FSM<\/abbr>), a portrait artist who uses charcoal; Eric Cano, a graphic artist from Chuuk in the <abbr>FSM<\/abbr>, who designs Micronesian and Pacific Island inspired clothing; and Ruth Truce, a Palauan coconut basket weaver. Also on view are photographs by Takeuchi, who travels extensively in the Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>Takeuchi noted that the timing of the exhibit connects with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festpachawaii.org\/\">13th Festival of Pacific Arts &#38; Culture<\/a> (FestPAC), which will be held June 6&#8211;16 in Honolulu. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> is one of the official venues of the festival, the world\u2019s largest celebration of Indigenous Pacific Islanders, according to the FestPAC website.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;7 Degrees North: The Arts of Micronesia&rdquo; is free and open to the public Monday&#8211;Friday (except for state holidays) during the library\u2019s regular spring semester hours.
