It is one of only 17 associate\u2019s degree granting institutions out of more than 1,200 to receive the recognition for the 2023&#8211;24 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>The Fulbright Program is the <a href=\"https:\/\/eca.state.gov\/\">U.S. Department of State\u2019s<\/a> flagship international academic exchange program. Sara Vogel, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral nine\">IX<\/abbr> coordinator, is a current Fulbright scholar who is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/07\/28\/sara-vogel-fulbright-award\/\">researching Indigenous sexual education<\/a> in Vancouver, Canada. Pamela Scheffler, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> geography, biology and environmental science professor, has served as a Fulbright scholar twice\u2014most recently during the 2022&#8211;23 academic year, when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/07\/pamela-scheffler-fulbright-scholar\/\">researched stingless bees<\/a> in Indonesia.  During the 2012&#8211;13 academic year, she researched biodiversity patterns in India.<\/p>\n<p>Vogel said, &ldquo;When I heard that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> was one of the top producing Fulbright institutions, I thought to myself, &lsquo;That makes sense, because we\u2019re a scrappy island, we\u2019re people who get things done and we want to make sure that we\u2019re not only sharing our stories across the islands, but across international borders.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Scheffler also serves as the Fulbright liaison for the campus and supported Vogel\u2019s application.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re comfortable and small and we\u2019ve got a lot of community here, but we\u2019re also looking outside and looking at the world around us and creating international opportunities for our students, for our faculty, for our staff,&rdquo; Scheffler said.<\/p>\n<p>Former <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Professor Trina Nahm-Mijo, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/08\/4-decades-service-innovation-nahm-mijo\/\">retired in 2021<\/a> after more than four decades of service, taught dance in Estonia 2010&#8211;11 as a Fulbright Scholar.
