The popular <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) segment features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiipublicradio.org\/show\/hawaiian-word-of-the-day\">Hawaiian word of the day<\/a>, a staple on <abbr>HPR<\/abbr> since 1994 and will mark its 30th anniversary this July. Hosted by Leilani <span aria-label=\"Poliahu\">Poli&#699;ahu<\/span>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa alumna<\/a>, the series explores <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> (words) encompassing everyday objects, people and places in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. (Credit: Ka Wai Ola News, Office of Hawaiian Affairs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Poliahu\">Poli&#699;ahu<\/span>, who now carries her husband\u2019s surname of Kamalani, recalled the idea to launch an <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> of the day segment stemmed from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> musician Keith Haugen who was taking Hawaiian language classes with her at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. Haugen proposed the segment, along with a brief <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> newscast, to HPR. The result was the debut of &ldquo;Ke Aolama&rdquo; in January 1994, featuring five-minute long news reads narrated by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Hawaiian language students such as <span aria-label=\"Poliahu\">Poli&#699;ahu<\/span> and Tammy <span aria-label=\"Hailiopua\">Haili&#699;&#333;pua<\/span> Baker. Baker went on to become a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa kumu <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language teacher) and an award-winning director of the university\u2019s first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hanakeaka\/\">Hawaiian theatre<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/24\/baker-kennedy-center-honor\/\">Historic Kennedy Center honor awarded to M&#257;noa kumu<\/a>, May 24, 2022<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Poliahu\">Poli&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s passion for <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> blossomed at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa while pursuing an accounting degree. The <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K&#257;ne&#699;ohe<\/span> native took Japanese classes all through high school but decided to try Hawaiian in college. In fall 1995, she contributed to the opening of Ke Kula Kaiapuni <span aria-label=\"O\">&#699;O<\/span> &#256;nuenue, a K&#8211;12 Hawaiian language immersion school in P&#257;lolo. Today, she continues her role there as an academic coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s more than a job. It\u2019s kind of a mission.
