Several examples of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa projects that attracted the attention of funders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1988, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Ocean Time-series (<abbr>HOT<\/abbr>) was established with support from the National Science Foundation to study changes in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. After nearly 350 expeditions to station ALOHA, the 35-year time-series record is still going strong. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hawaii-ocean-time-series\/\">Read more about the <abbr>HOT<\/abbr> program on <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student-led team was selected to develop a small research satellite for the <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> CubeSat Launch Initiative planned to launch between 2024&#8211;27. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/25\/student-team-develop-cubesat\/\">Read more about the project<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Kamaehuakanaloa\">Kama&#699;ehuakanaloa<\/span> (formerly <span aria-label=\"Loihi\">L\u014d&#699;ihi<\/span> Seamount), a submarine Hawaiian volcano located about 20 miles off the south coast of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, has erupted at least five times in the last 150 years, according to new research led by Earth scientists at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/06\/kamaehuakanaloa-eruption\/\">Read more about this research<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;This achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our faculty, staff and students who continue to elevate <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa as a beacon of excellence, propelling <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to the forefront of cutting-edge research and innovation,&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship Christopher Sabine said. &ldquo;The entire state should take pride in our collective commitment to advancing knowledge and contributing to the broader scientific community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Record extramural funding<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> brought in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/07\/20\/uh-sets-new-extramural-funding-record-fy2023\/\">record high of $515.9 million for <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2023 in extramural funding<\/a>, $10.9 million more than the previous record of $505 million set in <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2022. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, the flagship campus of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s 10 campus system, led the extramural funding amount with $342.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>Extramural funding is external investments from entities such as the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities conducted by university faculty and staff.
