{"id":191287,"date":"2024-02-05T08:00:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-05T18:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=191287"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:22:23","modified_gmt":"2024-02-03T02:22:23","slug":"nsf-herd-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/05\/nsf-herd-data\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa among nation\u2019s best in latest research rankings"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_176352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-176352\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-higp-epet-cubesat.jpg\" alt=\"student with electronics\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-176352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-higp-epet-cubesat.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-higp-epet-cubesat-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/manoa-higp-epet-cubesat-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-176352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Earth and planetary exploration technology student in a vacuum chamber.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> is <abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 91 out of the top 633 research institutions in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 59 out of the top 410 public universities, according to the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/ncses.nsf.gov\/surveys\/higher-education-research-development\/2022\">National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>) Higher Education Research and Development (<abbr>HERD<\/abbr>) Data<\/a>, which measures research and development federal expenditures across a variety of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The following disciplines at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa placed in the nation\u2019s top 10&#37;, according to the latest available data from <abbr title=\"Fiscal Year\">FY<\/abbr> 2022:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ocean sciences and marine sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 7 out of 396 (top 2&#37;)<\/li>\n<li>Astronomy and astrophysics: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 13 out of 493 (top 3&#37;)<\/li>\n<li>Geological and earth sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 15 out of 396 (top 4&#37;)<\/li>\n<li>Computer and information sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 27 out of 484 (top 6&#37;)<\/li>\n<li>Atmospheric science and meteorology: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 41 out of 396 (top 10&#37;)<\/li>\n<li>Social Work: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 47 out of 460 (top 10&#37;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is also in the top 11&#37; in agricultural sciences (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 38 out of 332) and electrical, electronic, and communications engineering (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 43 out of 388).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The data shows that in a highly competitive environment, the federal government recognizes the expertise here at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa by funding our research across multiple disciplines,&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno said. &ldquo;It underscores our continued success in fostering a dynamic research environment, attracting top-tier faculty and students, and further establishing ourselves as a hub for cutting-edge research to serve the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is a global leader in a wide range of disciplines, including earth and environmental sciences, sustainability, climate, food systems and the health sciences. Several examples of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa projects that attracted the attention of funders:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1988, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Ocean Time-series (<abbr>HOT<\/abbr>) was established with support from the National Science Foundation to study changes in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. After nearly 350 expeditions to station ALOHA, the 35-year time-series record is still going strong. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hawaii-ocean-time-series\/\">Read more about the <abbr>HOT<\/abbr> program on <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student-led team was selected to develop a small research satellite for the <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> CubeSat Launch Initiative planned to launch between 2024&#8211;27. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/25\/student-team-develop-cubesat\/\">Read more about the project<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Kamaehuakanaloa\">Kama&#699;ehuakanaloa<\/span> (formerly <span aria-label=\"Loihi\">L\u014d&#699;ihi<\/span> Seamount), a submarine Hawaiian volcano located about 20 miles off the south coast of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, has erupted at least five times in the last 150 years, according to new research led by Earth scientists at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/06\/kamaehuakanaloa-eruption\/\">Read more about this research<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;This achievement is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our faculty, staff and students who continue to elevate <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa as a beacon of excellence, propelling <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to the forefront of cutting-edge research and innovation,&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship Christopher Sabine said. &ldquo;The entire state should take pride in our collective commitment to advancing knowledge and contributing to the broader scientific community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Record extramural funding<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> brought in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/07\/20\/uh-sets-new-extramural-funding-record-fy2023\/\">record high of $515.9 million for <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2023 in extramural funding<\/a>, $10.9 million more than the previous record of $505 million set in <abbr>FY<\/abbr> 2022. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, the flagship campus of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s 10 campus system, led the extramural funding amount with $342.7 million.<\/p>\n<p>Extramural funding is external investments from entities such as the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and training activities conducted by university faculty and staff.
