  {"id":19084,"date":"2013-08-23T15:58:30","date_gmt":"2013-08-24T01:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=19084"},"modified":"2021-11-22T13:13:03","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T23:13:03","slug":"planned-learning-center-will-enhance-kanewai-cultural-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/08\/23\/planned-learning-center-will-enhance-kanewai-cultural-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Planned learning center will enhance K\u0101newai cultural garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mzn01EpavT0\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A traditional Hawaiian groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday, August 20, 2013 for a Cultural Resource Center at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/index.php\/site\/acad_kanewai\/en\/\">Ka Papa <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span> O K&#257;newai<\/a> Cultural Garden on the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> campus. <\/p>\n<p>The million-dollar center will include a large resource room and community learning area, an adjoining meeting room, learning laboratory, workshop, storage space and restrooms. A federal grant is covering about 80 percent of the cost, with the rest coming from private donations. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This center is going to change so dramatically the experiences our students have in understanding their roots, their heritage and also, the importance of kalo,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Tom Apple<\/strong> at the ceremony. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/kanewai1.jpg\" alt=\"kanewai 1\" width=\"400\" height=\"213\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19096\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/kanewai1.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/kanewai1-260x138.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It will bring us from out under the tents into a nicer facility, so we get to have workshops, we get to have meetings, we get to have classes,&rdquo; said <strong>Edward Makahiapo Cashman<\/strong>, executive director of the Ka Papa <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reopened in 1980 by a small group of Hawaiian language students, K&#257;newai <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge in 2007. <\/p>\n<p>K&#257;newai is a teaching cultural garden that features, what is thought to be, the largest collection of Native Hawaiian taro in existence&#8212;a 3.5 acre oasis of gurgling streams, taro ponds, native plant gardens, handmade rock terraces and a traditional, open-sided, thatched A-frame structure. <\/p>\n<p>K&#257;newai is a one-of-kind outdoor classroom where students of all ages, families and community groups immerse themselves in the Hawaiian culture. More than 30,000 people visited in 2012 alone. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our mission is to serve the community through hands-on learning,&rdquo; explained Cashman. &ldquo;You know, teach them about our culture, the Hawaiian culture, and that&#8217;s what K&#257;newai gives us that ability to do. It actually gives the students chances to come down here and practice, whether it be working in the <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span, practicing our language.&rdquo; <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Cultural Resource Center will go a long way in making sure that mission of education in na mea <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, all things Hawaiian, is fulfilled for generations to come. It is all thanks to everyone who has donated time and money and more donations are needed. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That&#8217;s classic of doing <span aria-label=\"Loi\">Lo&#699;i<\/span,&rdquo; said Cashman. &ldquo;It&#8217;s not one person, one face that&#8217;s doing it.
