The report documents the significant, positive impact the program is having on <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">Community College<\/a> students with proven financial need. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise is only for students who qualified for federal financial aid after completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a> (<abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>The report found that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise recipients earn more credits (reducing time to degree and increasing likelihood of degree completion), have higher passing rates (3.0 grade point average or better) and are more likely to stay enrolled (69&#37; vs. 65&#37;) compared to non-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hawaii-promise\/\">More on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eighty-four percent of the scholarship recipients would have been unable to enroll if not for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise, and 60&#37; are Native Hawaiians, Filipinos or from other ethnic groups underrepresented in higher education. Students do not apply for the scholarships, which are awarded as part of their financial aid package after all other means of aid are exhausted.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-shane-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person receiving diploma\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-172524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-shane-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-shane-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/cc-hawaii-promise-shane-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> is asking the 2024 state legislature to add $19 million a year to its budget to expand the program to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. According to the annual report, almost $3.8 million was awarded to 1,774 eligible students across the seven <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges in fiscal year 2023. The average award per student was $2,142, covering direct education costs such as tuition, books and fees.
