The second annual event from January 16&#8211;18 commemorates the 131st anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the 8th annual National Day of Racial Healing. The summit is aimed at promoting racial healing and reflection on the history, present, and future of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_190241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190241\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-one-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two people fist bumping \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-190241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-one-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-one-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-one-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-190241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Individuals connect together and discover similarities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 200 participants gathered on the university\u2019s upper campus for <abbr>HKHA<\/abbr>\u2019s opening day, which focused on uniting attendees from diverse backgrounds to engage in free workshops such as oli (chant), mele (song) and a journey through <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> past presented by the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhpol\/\">Native Hawaiian Place of Learning Advancement Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need to cultivate stronger connections with one another to pave the way for our children and future generations to embrace the unparalleled values that have shaped <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for centuries. Values like aloha and m&#257;lama&#8212;genuine care for others&#8212;may seem simple, yet in our daily lives they can be easily overlooked, &rdquo; Kaiwipunikauikaw&#275;kiu Punihei Lipe, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Native Hawaiian Affairs Program Officer. &ldquo;It\u2019s also vital for us to acknowledge painful chapters in our history and then find ways to heal and progress together.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In Hawaiian, &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kuu\">Ku&#699;u<\/span> Home Aloha&rdquo; means &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, my beloved home,&rdquo; the second annual event will run through January 18. Organizers request that those who plan to attend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/HKHA2024\">register online<\/a> so that they can make preparations for the anticipated numbers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/design\/DAF019kaChk\/qY32vJd_jQOI8n7fXYTVkw\/view?utm_content=DAF019kaChk&#038;utm_campaign=designshare&#038;utm_medium=link&#038;utm_source=editor\">Full list of <abbr>HKHA<\/abbr> summit events<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lajoya Reed Shelly, a graduate student majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/edea\/\">educational administration<\/a>, appreciates how <abbr>HKHA<\/abbr> works to propel racial healing through simple human to human connection.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There are things that matter to me as a Black woman that might not matter in the same ways to someone who is K&#257;naka <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;&#332;iwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiian) but if we find out and listen to each other\u2019s story we find those similarities and then we also find out that our liberation is tied up in each other,&rdquo; Shelly explained.<\/p>\n<h2>Honoring legacy and <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_190243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190243\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-third-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student at multicultural booth \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-190243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-third-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-third-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-hkha-summit-third-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-190243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Multicultural booths share cultural traditions from Polynesia, Philippines and Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On January 17, <abbr>HKHA<\/abbr> attendees will be encouraged to pause and reflect upon the anniversary of the Hawaiian Monarchy Overthrow, honor the <a href=\"https:\/\/dayofracialhealing.org\/\">National Day of Racial Healing<\/a> and commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A procession will begin at noon to present <span aria-label=\"hookupu\">ho&#699;okupu<\/span> (offering) in honor of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii's\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s<\/span> last reigning monarch at Ke Ahu o <span aria-label=\"Kamakaeha\">Kamaka&#699;eha<\/span> (<span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> altar) fronting the Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> Student Services Center. Oli and lei will be gifted to commemorate the Queen\u2019s legacy before proceeding to the Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s honorary plaque near the art department on campus. <span aria-label=\"Hookupu\">Ho&#699;okupu<\/span> and a brief presentation will pay homage to one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will also have the opportunity to m\u0101lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (care for the land) to learn and tend to on-campus plants.<\/p>\n<h2>Healing and restoring<\/h2>\n<p>The final day of the summit will feature Dr. Gail Christopher, a prominent advocate for racial healing, and Kumu Hula Kekuhi <span aria-label=\"Kealiikanakaoleohaililani\">Keali&#699;ikanaka&#699;oleohaililani<\/span> as keynote speakers at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/kennedy-theatre\/\">Kennedy Theatre<\/a> at 6:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s commitment to racial healing<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is one of more than 60 <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhpol\/trht\/\">Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Centers<\/a> (<abbr>TRHT<\/abbr>) across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> and the U.S. selected to implement ambitious, visionary action plans that tackle historical and contemporary effects of racism.
