  {"id":190094,"date":"2024-01-16T08:00:46","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T18:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=190094"},"modified":"2024-01-12T23:43:59","modified_gmt":"2024-01-13T09:43:59","slug":"training-hs-students-certified-nurse-aides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/16\/training-hs-students-certified-nurse-aides\/","title":{"rendered":"Training <abbr>HS<\/abbr> students to fill the urgent need for certified nurse aides"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-1.jpg\" alt=\"Student holding nursing scrubs\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-190106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-1.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-1-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To fill a critical shortage of medical professionals in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, some high school students are training at their schools to become certified nurse aides (<abbr>CNA<\/abbr>) through a partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hah.org\/\">Healthcare Association of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> (<abbr>HAH<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>According to <abbr>HAH<\/abbr>, there were 3,873 open non-physician healthcare positions across 89 professions in 2022. <abbr>HAH<\/abbr> collaborated with Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> for a pilot high school <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> training program in 2023, at Farrington, <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> High Schools that was funded by federal and private sources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Good experience, loved it,&rdquo; said Farrington student Melody Agodong. &ldquo;(It) teaches you about basic nursing skills to get the job. Labs were great. Employment support and [transition training] were super helpful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the pilot year, students secured employment at various healthcare facilities, including Manoa Cottage Kaimuki, The Plaza Assisted Living, Garden Isle Rehab and Nursing and Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.<\/p>\n<h2>Public-private collaboration supports healthcare workforce<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Students smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-190105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/leeward-hs-cna-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With funding from <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/goodjobshawaii\/\">Good Jobs <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> (<abbr>GJH<\/abbr>)&#8212;a joint effort between the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and various federal, state, county and philanthropic resources, offering free skills training in high-demand sectors&#8212;<abbr>HAH<\/abbr> was able to work with Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Office of Workforce Development to set up Farrington High School as a Central <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> hub and <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School as a West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> hub to host <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> training for more high school students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/good-jobs-hawaii\/\">Read more <abbt>Âé¶¹´«Ã½News stories about Good Jobs <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/abbt><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> provides the instructors and sets up mini labs at the schools for the <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> cohorts, and the <abbr>GJH<\/abbr> funding covers the cost of certifications and the externships provided through the <abbr>HAH<\/abbr> and their participating members. In addition, the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Department of Geriatric Workforce Development Program provides additional lab space, equipment and training on caring for persons living with dementia.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2024, Mililani High School seniors will begin <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> training at their school, while students from Farrington, McKinley and Kaimuki High Schools will train at the Farrington hub. <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> High School is also scheduled to begin <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> training.
