  {"id":190063,"date":"2024-01-12T14:34:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-13T00:34:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=190063"},"modified":"2024-01-12T14:34:22","modified_gmt":"2024-01-13T00:34:22","slug":"early-career-fellowships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/12\/early-career-fellowships\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholars trailblazing Earth, ocean sciences earn early career fellowships"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_190076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-190076\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-early-career-3.jpg\" alt=\"three people smiling\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-190076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-early-career-3.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-early-career-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-early-career-3-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-190076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Camille Pagniello, Christopher Wall and Sara Kahanamoku-Meyer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) awarded Early Career Research Fellowships to three outstanding scholars: Sara Kahanamoku-Meyer, Camille Pagniello and Christopher Wall.<\/p>\n<h2>Sara Kahanamoku-Meyer<\/h2>\n<p>Kahanamoku-Meyer, a specialist in place-based, <span aria-label=\"Oiwiled\">&#699;&#332;iwi-led<\/span> paleoecology, uses paleoecology, applied through a kanaka <span aria-label=\"oiwi\">&#699;&#333;iwi<\/span> (Native Hawaiian) lens, to study the impacts of climate change and colonialism on Pacific marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This fellowship will allow me to bring conservation paleobiology&#8212;a relatively new focus for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2014back\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8212;back<\/span> to my home community after over a decade living on the continent,&rdquo; said Kahanamoku-Meyer. &ldquo;I am particularly excited to be in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>, as its faculty, staff, and students all hold a wealth of place-based and interdisciplinary expertise and understand the value of doing research that supports the communities of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Camille Pagniello<\/h2>\n<p>Pagniello\u2019s research lies at the intersection of oceanography, engineering, data science and marine biology with a focus on developing new tools and approaches to study fish movement, communication and biodiversity in our changing ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I will be utilizing data science techniques to extract novel information about the ocean from existing data streams and developing new instrumentation platforms to expand the existing ocean observing network,&rdquo; said Pagniello. &ldquo;This will provide an ideal environment for conducting impactful research at the forefront of oceanography and to harness the power of low-cost sensors to address interdisciplinary, sustainability-relevant questions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Christopher Wall<\/h2>\n<p>Wall is a physiological ecologist whose research has focused on coral reefs, wetlands, forests and alpine lakes. Wall uses stable isotopes and molecular techniques to study symbioses, food webs and microbiomes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I will be applying cutting-edge molecular tools to understand the interactions between reef corals and macroalgae in the Main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands,&rdquo; said Wall. &ldquo;This fellowship represents a unique opportunity for me to return to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> where I can pursue my passions for coral reef research, student mentorship, and community engagement.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;After a decade of silence, the <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Early Career Research Fellowship has come roaring back to life with our selection of three early career scholars,&rdquo; said Chip Fletcher, <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> interim dean. &ldquo;Our goal is to attract and support stellar talent who are hired as faculty and provided with the authority to write grants and develop prominent research programs.
