  {"id":189562,"date":"2024-01-02T13:00:19","date_gmt":"2024-01-02T23:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=189562"},"modified":"2024-01-02T13:01:13","modified_gmt":"2024-01-02T23:01:13","slug":"rochette-yu-tsuen-graduate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/01\/02\/rochette-yu-tsuen-graduate\/","title":{"rendered":"From Tahiti to Hawai\u02bbi: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate gained authentic research experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_189569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189569\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-tahiti-hawaii.jpg\" alt=\"people in boats\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-189569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-tahiti-hawaii.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-tahiti-hawaii-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-tahiti-hawaii-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rochette-Yu Tsuen during the Hollings Scholar internship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Upon graduating in December, Keanu Rochette-Yu Tsuen could confidently say that he had seized every opportunity to have authentic, hands-on research experiences during his time as an undergraduate student at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>Rochette-Yu Tsuen grew up on the island of Tahiti, French Polynesia and moved to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for college, first as a student at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> and then at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa where he completed his bachelor\u2019s in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/ges\/\">Global Environmental Science<\/a> (<abbr>GES<\/abbr>) program in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>At <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"community college\">CC<\/abbr>, he had opportunities to participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/kapionews.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/18\/keanu-rochette-yu-tsuen\/\">research projects<\/a> in botany, ethnobotany, ecology and microbiology with mentors Wendy Kuntz, John Berestecky and Mike Ross.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Keanu is a real standout among our STEM students, who took full advantage of every opportunity to participate in undergraduate research both in and out of the classroom, including leading our Ecology Club students on interisland service projects,&rdquo; said Kuntz, a professor of biology and ecology at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;We are so proud of his achievements.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_189572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-189572\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-keanu-rochette-yu-tsuen-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"student by research\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-189572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-keanu-rochette-yu-tsuen-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-keanu-rochette-yu-tsuen-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/manoa-soest-keanu-rochette-yu-tsuen.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-189572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rochette-Yu Tsuen presenting his senior thesis research.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Microbiology at Hawaiian fishpond<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>GES<\/abbr> students are required to complete a senior research thesis to build valuable experience and transferable skills. Support for Rochette-Yu Tsuen\u2019s research project was provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/marc-uhm.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">Maximizing Access to Research Careers<\/a> (<abbr>MARC<\/abbr>) Program through <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, which aims to provide training in biological research for a diverse group of students who are underrepresented in the sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Working with Rosie Alegado, associate professor in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>, Rochette-Yu Tsuen tested for the presence of bacteria in the <em>Leptospiraceae<\/em> family in samples collected at the <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> fishpond on <span aria-label=\"Oahu.\">O&#699;ahu.<\/span> This family of bacteria contains pathogenic members which can cause leptospirosis.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the project was to find environmental factors that correlate with the presence of <em>Leptospiraceae<\/em> in the <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> fishpond, which could help  researchers provide information about the risk of exposure to the Paepae o <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;During my time in the Alegado Lab, I strengthened my ability to do research and I developed a better appreciation for microbiology and its application in environmental science,&rdquo; said Rochette-Yu Tsuen. &ldquo;I also enjoyed working in my lab because research projects are developed with the input of community members.
