(Photo credit: Sharon Ziegler-Chong)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To address this vital issue of sustenance, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and other stakeholders are incorporating contemporary science with sustainable practices of the past to help provide solutions to food and energy security, for the state and beyond. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has partnered with <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span>, a non-profit, place-based research center and living scientific laboratory on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island that is gathering academic experts, Native Hawaiian practitioners, community members, students and government representatives to develop sustainability solutions based on ancestral knowledge and Indigenous practices.<\/p>\n<p>Located on approximately 2,400 acres in Kohala, the <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> (self-sustaining sections of land that run from mountain to the sea) was gifted to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Foundation (<abbr>HCF<\/abbr>) by longtime stewards, the Kohala Institute and the New Moon Foundation, in an effort to increase capacity to the area\u2019s restoration. <abbr>HCF<\/abbr> partnered with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to leverage their expertise and resources in three areas: energy security, food security and place-based learning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188977\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188977\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/system-noelo-ovpri-iole-point-gulch-pond-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"big gulch pond\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188977\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/system-noelo-ovpri-iole-point-gulch-pond-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/system-noelo-ovpri-iole-point-gulch-pond-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/system-noelo-ovpri-iole-point-gulch-pond.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Partially restored gulch pond field<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We are all excited at this opportunity to collaboratively envision and create a 21st century <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span>,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span> can be a place grounded in Hawaiian values and knowledge where we are jointly committed to the innovation and courage necessary to integrate traditional and modern ways of learning, doing and living.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>One of the first priorities of <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span> was to assess and inventory the critical natural resources found throughout the <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span>. The findings helped to establish the foundation of <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span>\u2019s strategy and engagement, He Le Aloha no <span aria-label=\"Iole\">&#699;Iole<\/span>, which was crafted by Sharon Ziegler-Chong, director of research and community partnerships at <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and Kamuela Enos, director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/research.hawaii.edu\/oiki\/\">Office of Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation<\/a>.
