(Photo credit: Christine Lamborn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Undergraduates in the new <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in theatre and dance can pursue one of two concentrations: dance or theatre. The new <abbr title=\"bachelors of fine arts\">BFA<\/abbr> in theatre and dance will maintain its previous concentration in dance and will add one in acting for theatre, screen and new media. The new <abbr>BFA<\/abbr> concentration aligns with the department\u2019s commitment to strengthen ties with the state\u2019s growing film and <abbr>TV<\/abbr> industry by providing training and education for students to move directly into the workforce in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the continental <abbr>U.S<\/abbr>. and globally.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This responds to an often-heard plea from top casting directors in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for more trained actors for professional roles in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s film and television industry,&rdquo; said Markus Wessendorf, department chair for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Department of Theatre and Dance.<\/p>\n<h2>Educator development<\/h2>\n<p>For the <abbr title=\"master of arts\">MA<\/abbr>, a new non-thesis emphasis in theatre education is now available, matching the existing dance education emphasis. Both <abbr>MA<\/abbr> plans support statewide efforts to expand teacher education. Doctoral study in this area will center performance practices of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in a global context through the study of Indigenous performance traditions, Indigenous methodologies and concepts, as well as Indigenous language, culture, politics, history, environment and sustainability. The steadily increasing enrollment of the existing <abbr title=\"Masters of fine arts\">v<\/abbr> program in Hawaiian Theatre and the local, national and international attention it has received, indicates the potential of Hawaiian performance as a major subject of scholarly and creative research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[It\u2019s] imperative to the continual development of Hawaiian arts and sciences on this campus and to the continual strengthening of the presence and relevance of the Hawaiian language in our country,&rdquo; said Jonathan <abbr>K<\/abbr>. Osorio, dean of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All degrees in the department are now degrees in &ldquo;theatre and dance&rdquo; versus &ldquo;theatre&rdquo; and &ldquo;dance&rdquo; in an effort to become a more unified department.<\/p>\n<h2>More graduate degrees<\/h2>\n<p>Graduate students in the new <abbr>MFA<\/abbr> in theatre and dance can pursue one of two concentrations: dance or theatre; in the <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in theatre and dance students may select one of three concentrations: <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in dance, theatre or performance studies.
