Currently, he is ranked 2nd with a career record of 1,179-198-1.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>Update<\/strong>: Shoji will be conferred with the honorary doctorate of humane letters degree at the spring Âé¶¹´«Ã½M\u0101noa commencement ceremony on May 11, 2024 at 3:30 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dave Shoji is a symbol of women\u2019s collegiate volleyball excellence leading the Rainbow Wahine to four national championships during his 41 years as head coach. In recognition of his achievements, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Board of Regents<\/a> awarded him with an honorary doctorate of humane letters degree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188280\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-athletics-shoji-honorary-doctorate-headshot-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-athletics-shoji-honorary-doctorate-headshot-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-athletics-shoji-honorary-doctorate-headshot-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-athletics-shoji-honorary-doctorate-headshot.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Shoji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The name Dave Shoji is synonymous with the sport of volleyball, not only in the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> but also throughout the country,&rdquo; said former <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Athletics Director David Matlin in a letter submitted in support of the nomination. &ldquo;And when one talks about Dave Shoji, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is sure to be mentioned in the same breath.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Shoji was the head coach of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiathletics.com\/sports\/womens-volleyball\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa women&#8217;s volleyball team<\/a> from 1975 to 2016 and is the second-winningest coach in Division <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"National Collegiate Athletics Association\">NCAA<\/abbr> volleyball history with 1,202 wins and an .855 winning percentage. He coached 90 All-Americans, five national players of the year and five Olympians and was inducted into the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Circle of Honor, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sports Hall of Fame and American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Former <abbr>UH<\/abbr> women\u02bbs volleyball assistant coach and player Kari Ambrozich and longtime sports writer Ann Miller, who reported for the <em>Honolulu Advertiser<\/em> and <em>Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/em>, also submitted letters of support.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;His success could be attributed to a number of personal characteristics, including: his drive, leadership style, work ethic, and knowledge,&rdquo; wrote Ambrozich. &ldquo;But he was equally masterful at orchestrating all of the moving pieces of the volleyball program that resulted in highly successful outcomes that evolved over four decades.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Beyond what he has accomplished to deserve all the honors he has received, what makes Dave remarkable is simply his impact on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and his players,&rdquo; wrote Miller. &ldquo;No other place comes close to the passion our state has had for the Rainbow Wahine and volleyball the past 40-plus years.
