Thanks to an oral history project by students in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/anthropology.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Anthropology<\/a>, the <span aria-label=\"moolelo\">mo&#699;olelo<\/span> of <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span>\u2019s k\u016bpuna have been documented and will live on for generations to come.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188003\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-waialee-students-faculty-staff-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people pose for a photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-waialee-students-faculty-staff-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-waialee-students-faculty-staff-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-waialee-students-faculty-staff.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students, faculty and staff at <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;My mom was displaced when she was a child&#8212;she&#8217;s from P\u016bp\u016bkea originally,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student Kenzie Kahale-Alexander, who worked on the project. &ldquo;And so being able to hear stories of the area and kind of get an idea of maybe that&#8217;s what it was like for my family. That was kind of special. They took me in like family at the interview part and I&#8217;m just so fortunate to have met them and been able to work in this area.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>More than 20 students spent the fall 2023 semester documenting oral histories of nine <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> k\u016bpuna as part of Ethnic Studies and Anthropology Professor Ty K\u0101wika Tengan\u2019s North Shore Field School course. The students presented their final projects to the community at a <span aria-label=\"hoike\">h\u014d&#699;ike<\/span> event on December 2, hosted in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northshoreland.org\/\">North Shore Community Land Trust<\/a>. The community organization was instrumental in forging partnerships with <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, providing connections to community and k\u016bpuna, site access and hosting events.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a really unique, important opportunity for students to do community-based work with both the Hawaiian community, as well as non-Hawaiian community members who have long standing ties to the place,&rdquo; Tengan said. &ldquo;We&#8217;re looking to instill in them an ethical sense, a kuleana-based approach to honoring the words of our narrators, the storytellers sharing their life experiences. It&#8217;s something that can only happen in a field school situation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">&ldquo;I&#8217;ve been with this project for almost two years now and I really love learning about the history of this place.&rdquo; &#8212;Dani Kaohe David<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oralhistory.hawaii.edu\/\">Center for Oral History<\/a> Director Mary Kunmi Yu Danico and Associate Director Micah Mizukami, the students conducted oral history interviews covering various topics with their narrators, including the <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> Training School for Boys, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Experimental Agricultural Station, kuleana land parcels and childhood memories of their upbringing in <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span>. Additional support came from graduate student <span aria-label=\"alakai\">alaka&#699;i<\/span> (leaders) Alana Kanahele, Dani Kaohe David, Naomi Doherty and Amber McClure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;ve been with this project for almost two years now and I really love learning about the history of this place,&rdquo; Kaohe David said. &ldquo;I didn&#8217;t think I would as much as I do now. The Center for Oral History is honored to be part of this history in <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span>!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The k\u016bpuna were Nohea Santimer, Leona Lui, Rachel Paris, Mildred Cataluna, Paul and Verna Eguires, Daniel <span aria-label=\"Nahoopii\">Nahoopi&#699;i<\/span>, Margaret Primacio and JennieLee Andrade.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The students were great, made you feel comfortable and just their interests alone in what we had to say was pretty comforting, I guess, you know, because there was meaning to them for what we had to say,&rdquo; Paul Eguires said.<\/p>\n<h2>Place-based service learning and scholarship<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_188013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-188013\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-hoike-waialee-laptop-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people looking at a laptop\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-188013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-hoike-waialee-laptop-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-hoike-waialee-laptop-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-ethnic-studies-hoike-waialee-laptop.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-188013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students presented their final projects to the community at a <span aria-label=\"hoike\">h\u014d&#699;ike<\/span> event on December 2.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The project was funded in part by an award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/23\/building-on-pandemic-lessons-provost-funding\/\">Provost\u2019s Strategic Investment Initiative<\/a>, a campus-wide competition designed to increase cross-unit and cross-disciplinary collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>This course is a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/provost\/initiatives\/strategic-investment-initiative\/\"><span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> Lako Pono Provost&#8217;s Strategic Investment Initiative<\/a>, a project that builds upon robust collaborations to develop <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> as a site of resurgent education, research and resilience for the North Shore community and beyond. The project was initiated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northshoreland.org\/\">North Shore Community Land Trust<\/a> as part of the effort to restore environmental, agricultural and social abundance to <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span>. The community group leases 30 acres from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8216;s former <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> livestock research station to restore <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span> kalo, fishponds, agroforestry and habitat for native species.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> Lako Pono initiative that got funded by the provost was the effort of the university to fulfill that kuleana to listen to the people of the community to really take its role as a steward of the land seriously,&rdquo; Tengan said. &ldquo;All of these departments are coming together to have a holistic view of what it means to bring university faculty and students together to restore a place with the direction of the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">&ldquo;Partnering with professors like Kumu K\u0101wika Tengan doing the oral history field school out here is really important to preserving the history of this side of the island.&rdquo; &#8212;Kawela Farrant, the North Shore Community Land Trust<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cross-disciplinary programming will be created for <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> centers on place-based service learning and engaged scholarship. <span aria-label=\"Waialee\">Waiale&#699;e<\/span> demonstrates how Âé¶¹´«Ã½can meet its kuleana to <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;\u0101ina<\/span> through community-based and community-supported work. The initiative is a collaboration among the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages &#38; Letters<\/a> and the <a
