The event connected nearly 200 students with invaluable campus resources and contacts, and also treated them to free boba, tote bags and giveaways. <\/p>\n<p>The event also provided an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to share their experiences and their journey as first-generation students to inspire others in the community.<\/p>\n<h2>Being a positive role model<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187289\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-kikila-lani-grad-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lani and family grad photo\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-kikila-lani-grad-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-kikila-lani-grad-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-kikila-lani-grad.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kikilia Lani with her family.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kikilia Lani is a first-generation student of Kanaka <span aria-label=\"Oiwi\">&#699;O&#299;wi<\/span>, Boricua, Ilocano and Chinese descent. She graduated and earned degrees from <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulu.hawaii.edu\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> (<abbr title=associate in science degree\">AS<\/abbr> in early childhood education and teaching) and at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa (<abbr title=\"bachelor of arts degree\">BA<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"master of education degree\">ME<\/abbr>). She is currently a PhD student in education and an instructional and support specialist with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>. She said poverty and kuleana is what led her to college.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I didn\u02bbt want to be poor anymore, and I recognized education as a means to socioeconomic mobility,&rdquo; Lani said. &ldquo;I felt that excelling in school was one way I could show appreciation to my mom and honor the struggles she went through while raising me, while serving as a positive role model for my younger siblings.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>While it can feel lonely and difficult at times, Lani said she feels privileged to be a first-generation student. &ldquo;I recognize that each accomplishment contributes to the realization of the dreams of those who came before me. Knowing that those who come after me can focus less on the struggle and more on their dreams\u2026gives me pride and makes me want to keep going&#8230;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She reminds other first-generation students to not be afraid to ask for help, which can lead to meaningful connections, new insights and exciting experiences.<\/p>\n<h2>Pathway for better opportunities<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187288\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187288\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-crichfield-theresa-headshot-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"crichfield headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-crichfield-theresa-headshot-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-crichfield-theresa-headshot-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-crichfield-theresa-headshot.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Theresa Crichfield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Theresa Crichfield is <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s associate vice provost for <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/studentsuccess\/about\/\">student success<\/a> and dean of students. For her, college was the pathway for opportunities to better herself and her family.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My grandparents fled a dictatorship in Cuba and came to the <abbr>USA<\/abbr> for the American Dream. I can tell you, our family was fortunate enough to make it here,&rdquo; she shared. &ldquo;I was able to blaze my own trail with the support of my family and made my grandparents and parents proud that I was able to be college-educated and attain more than they did.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In her role overseeing various student services, she emphasizes that the campus is packed with resources and people who want to support first-generation students on their journey to graduation. &ldquo;Building a network of friends and mentors is crucial!&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>New experiences<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187290\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187290\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-mizukami-micah-214x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Mizukami photo\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-187290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-mizukami-micah-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-mizukami-micah-93x130.jpeg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/manoa-mizukami-micah.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micah Mizukami<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Micah Mizukami is the associate director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/oralhistory.hawaii.edu\/\">Center for Oral History<\/a> and a first-generation Japanese and Okinawan student. He earned his <abbr>MA<\/abbr> in linguistics and is currently pursuing his PhD in second language studies at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. He earned his <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in Japanese Studies at Willamette University in Oregon.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in the small town of <span aria-label=\"Eleele\">&#699;Ele&#699;ele<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> led him to venture somewhere new and different for his undergraduate college experience. &ldquo;I always loved traveling and seeing new places and meeting new people, and I wanted the same for my college experience,&rdquo; said Mizukami.<\/p>\n<p>His advice for other first-generation students?
