event, hosted at the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> on November 3.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted to organize this event because it is important to have homegrown teachers,&rdquo; Rodgers said. &ldquo;I just wanted them to stay here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and become teachers and have their careers here in<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The first-ever event was supported in part by a grant from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Education Association. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/about\/noteworthy\/student-success-initiatives\/summer-programs\/#hoopuliko-kumu-hou\"><span aria-label=\"HoopUliko\">Ho&#699;op&#363;liko<\/span> Kumu Hou program<\/a>, a Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral three\">III<\/abbr> grant that supports the middle\/secondary education pathway project, provided financial support to host the event on the campus.<\/p>\n<p>Dive Into Education featured a keynote address with advice from a veteran teacher, a panel discussion and Q&#38;A with current education students from different colleges and universities, and a college fair with information about college and university teaching programs in the islands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_186595\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-186595\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/west-dive-into-education-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"Panelists at the event\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-186595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/west-dive-into-education-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/west-dive-into-education-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/west-dive-into-education.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-186595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West O&#699;ahu panelists: Raymart Billote (w\/mic), Joshua Kamalani (3rd from right), and Makayla Rogers-Tivao (right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The panelists included three representatives from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>&#8212;<span aria-label=\"HoopUliko\">Ho&#699;op&#363;liko<\/span> Kumu Hou program participants and secondary education majors&#8212;Raymart Billote, Joshua Kamalani, and Makayla Rogers-Tivao.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was blessed to have really good teachers \u2026 great role models,&rdquo; said Rogers-Tivao a current student teacher at James Campbell High School. &ldquo;Just being able to help kids out is one of the most important things that I find about teaching.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The students who attended Dive Into Education were from Campbell, Farrington, Kapolei, Leilehua, N&#257;n&#257;kuli, Pearl City and Waipahu high schools.
