  {"id":186040,"date":"2023-10-30T14:14:22","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T00:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=186040"},"modified":"2023-10-30T14:14:22","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T00:14:22","slug":"cds-play-for-all-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/30\/cds-play-for-all-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Inclusive sports program encourages all keiki to keep active"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap-post\"><figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe  id=\"_ytid_10832\"  width=\"620\" height=\"349\"  data-origwidth=\"620\" data-origheight=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_oBn-pwEnWE?enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu&rel=0&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"Uniquely M\u0101noa: KRS 443 - Play for All\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"small-text\"><abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> for All was featured in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa social media series titled, &ldquo;Uniquely M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A physical literacy program developed within the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> (<abbr>COE<\/abbr>) is helping all keiki feel involved while keeping active&#8212;including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and children who are neurotypical.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> for All (Physical Literacy and Activities for Youth) program is unique to <abbr>COE<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/krs\/\">Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> (<abbr>KRS<\/abbr>), originating in course <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> 443 &#8211; Disability and Diversity in Physical Activity. <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> 443 has approximately 60 college students enrolled per semester, and each student is responsible for leading one <abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> session. Sessions include instruction on gross motor skills or sport-oriented skills and are hosted at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Klum Gym.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-coe-play-3.png\" alt=\"k r s student and child\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-186033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-coe-play-3.png 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-coe-play-3-214x300.png 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-coe-play-3-93x130.png 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Keiki participate in warm-ups, motor skills and locomotor activities and games with an approximate ratio of 1:1 coach to student. They also interact with each other in an inclusive environment and engage in fun activities designed to connect physical, social and emotional skills, and lead them to love being active.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The beauty of the <abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> for All program is that it is mutually beneficial,&rdquo; said <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> Assistant Professor Allison Tsuchida. &ldquo;We are able to provide a low-cost after-school inclusive physical activity program that allows all children the opportunity to learn and practice their motor skills, while our <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> students practice leading activities, modifying activities to meet the needs of diverse learners, and communicating effectively.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> is geared toward children ages 3&#8211;10 who can attend one session a week from 3 to 4 p.m. The 10-week program begins early September for the fall semester and early February for the spring semester. Those interested in signing up their keiki to join <abbr>P.L.A.Y.<\/abbr> can contact Tsuchida at <a href=\"mailto:artsuchi@hawaii.edu\">artsuchi@hawaii.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This program is so awesome, so exciting,&rdquo; said one parent. &ldquo;My daughter left sweating from all that physical activity. She loved it, and it was encouraging to see all the kids and students playing together.
