More than 2,000 prospective students and their ʻohana<\/span>, alumni and the public were able to “Discover UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>” at a campus-wide open house event at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The attendees had the opportunity to engage with students, faculty and staff from approximately 200 academic programs and services, and experienced more than 250 activities ranging from hands-on workshops, demonstrations, food, entertainment and more, including: demonstrations and workshops with Â鶹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a>; School of Life Sciences<\/a> presentations about how blind fish evolve super sensors to adapt to extreme environments or about the discovery of new microbes throughout Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>; and a walk through a 45 ft<\/abbr>. inflatable whale to explore its anatomy in 3D<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

“I hope that they see that your university, right here in your backyard, is a world class university with something for everybody,” UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost Michael Bruno said.<\/p>\n

Current students and employees led walking tours of the campus and facilities, including the Warrior Recreation Center, student housing, insect museum, physics and astronomy lab, Brain and Behavior Lab, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> labs and more.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m pretty excited because I\u2019m almost to the age to obviously go to college. And both of my parents are UH<\/abbr> alumni, including my older brother, so I\u2019m looking at this school to be a prospect,” said Daniel Shiraki, a Kalani High School junior.<\/p>\n

Melanie Shiraki, Daniel\u2019s mother and a proud UH<\/abbr> alumna said, “For him to consider UH<\/abbr> is really exciting. At least he\u2019ll be at home with us still, but going to a really good school.”<\/p>\n

Discover UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa attendees purchased UH<\/abbr> gear from the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Bookstore, and interacted with UH<\/abbr> athletes and coaches from at least eight different sports teams for games, prize drawings, autographs and photo ops.<\/p>\n

UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is consistently ranked among the top 2% globally out of more than 25,000 universities and colleges by major higher education rankings services. For the 12th straight year, UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa set a record in on-time graduation rates, earning a degree in four years (44.1%), and the six-year graduation rate was also at a record high (62.3%). For the second straight year, UH<\/abbr> set a record in extramural funding (external investments from federal government, industry and non-profit organizations) at $515.9 million, $10.9 million more than the previous record of $505 million.
