courses in effective teaching practices, they report substantial increases in their confidence in using these proven practices, while also seeing positive changes in their mindsets about their ability to impact student learning. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are incredibly proud to have been part of this work with <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr><br \/>&#8212;Laura Lyons<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/acue.org\/mindset-research\/\">report<\/a> by <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr> was released revealing these significant implications for higher education. <\/p>\n<p>Since being invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/09\/manoa-acue-gateway-courses-program\/\">participate in <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>\u2019s three-year study<\/a>, &ldquo;Impacts of Faculty Development on Faculty\u2019s Mindsets and Self-Efficacy,&rdquo; funded by the Bill &#38; Melinda Gates Foundation in fall 2021, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has engaged 65 faculty from various disciplines and departments across the university with support from the Center for Teaching Excellence in the Office of Faculty Development and Academic Support. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-acue-course-modules-graphic.png\" alt=\"graphic of A C U E course modules\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-184900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-acue-course-modules-graphic.png 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-acue-course-modules-graphic-130x130.png 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first study cohort completed <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr> program courses that covered evidence-based teaching practices proven through <a href=\"https:\/\/acue.org\/impact-reports\/\">independently-validated research<\/a> to improve student achievement and close equity gaps. <a href=\"https:\/\/acue.org\/impact-reports\/\">The cohort was recognized at a ceremony in February<\/a> and presented with a nationally-recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/acue.org\/certificates\/\">Certificate in Effective College Instruction<\/a>, the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are incredibly proud to have been part of this work with <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Laura Lyons, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa interim vice provost for academic excellence. &ldquo;As we continue to engage more faculty in the study, our hope is that thousands of our students will benefit and achieve academic success, while adding important contributions to our understanding of faculty impact on student success.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Data reveals growth mindset in students<\/h2>\n<p>Data collected by <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr> revealed that students taught by <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>-trained faculty perceived significant increases in their own growth mindset, as well as their confidence participating in class, attending office hours, and managing their coursework and deadlines. That feedback came from nearly 3,000 student surveys. <\/p>\n<p>Jason Kenji Higa, assistant professor of anatomy, biochemistry and physiology at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>, who was part of the first cohort, said he was happy he took part in the <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr> courses and has seen an improvement in his students who actively participate in activities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184917\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-higa-kenji-acue-ceremony-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"higa congratulated by president lassner\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-higa-kenji-acue-ceremony-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-higa-kenji-acue-ceremony-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/manoa-higa-kenji-acue-ceremony.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jason Kenji Higa is congratulated by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner for completing the ACUE courses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The program is evidence-based and it shows I\u2019m using the best practices and most current practices, so getting that kind of credential says that, &lsquo;Hey, I have something standardized and other people are using nationwide&rsquo; so that\u2019s pretty meaningful,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The long-range study focuses on &ldquo;gateway&rdquo; courses, with data collected from more than 570 faculty nationally who participated in <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>\u2019s comprehensive Effective Teaching Practice Framework courses, and more than 1,000 faculty, who had not yet participated in <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>\u2019s courses. Faculty are surveyed four times over two years, including using mindset items originally developed by noted researcher Carol Dweck. Students enrolled in gateway courses taught by faculty who participated in <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr>\u2019s comprehensive Effective Teaching Practice Framework courses, were also surveyed.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Mindsets matter. What we believe about our students\u2019 ability to learn affects what they will learn, or won\u2019t,&rdquo; said Jonathan Gyurko, <abbr>ACUE<\/abbr> president and co-founder. &ldquo;Even though beliefs are famously hard to change, today\u2019s strong findings show that minds change when professors become better teachers.
