{"id":18485,"date":"2013-07-19T15:28:07","date_gmt":"2013-07-20T01:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=18485"},"modified":"2023-03-15T14:02:46","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T00:02:46","slug":"scholarship-program-aims-to-keep-hawaiis-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/07\/19\/scholarship-program-aims-to-keep-hawaiis-best\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarship program aims to keep <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s best"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bYmuJWImiFY\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 2013 University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/studentaffairs\/scholarships\/raps-overview.php\">Regents and Presidential Scholarship<\/a> winners were honored at a dinner July 18 at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pomaikaiballrooms.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Pomaikai\">Pomaika\u02bbi<\/span> Ballrooms at Dole Cannery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship program is an ongoing effort to keep the state\u2019s best and brightest right here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Board of Regents established these scholarships to support students at all 10 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses across the state who have records of outstanding academic and community achievement,\u201d said <strong>John Holzman<\/strong>, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents chair.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/finaid\/scholarships\/raps\/regents-index.html\">Regents scholarships<\/a> are given to 20 incoming freshman. They are all local high school graduates and well-rounded students who more than excelled in the classroom and in their national college entrance exams.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/finaid\/scholarships\/raps\/presidential-index.html\">Presidential Scholars<\/a> are incoming college juniors with a high grade-point-average and evidence of superior academic achievement or creative endeavor.<\/p>\n<p>All of the scholars receive full tuition waivers, $4,000 a year and a $2,000, one-time, travel grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I heard that I got the presidential scholarship, it was kind of this moment where the clouds parted and I knew I had a home, I knew I was supported,\u201d said <strong>Aleca Borsuk<\/strong>, a 2013 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Presidential Scholar. \u201cIt was a game changer. It really was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a new opportunity for me to start and go onto to the path of my dream to go to med school,\u201d said 2013 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Regent Scholar <strong>Sylvia Koo<\/strong>, a Kalani High School graduate.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the tuition waiver is a huge benefit for the scholarship winners and their parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister, too,\u201d said Koo. \u201cShe is not in high school yet.
