Some University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students, faculty, staff and alumni have been able to assist in the recovery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> student Kamehalani Ortiz, who is majoring in public administration with an emphasis on disaster preparedness and emergency management, is a recipient of the Chandler Scholarship in Social Sciences, and recently assisted with Maui fire relief efforts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184604\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-ortiz-k-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"male headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-ortiz-k-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-ortiz-k-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-ortiz-k.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamehalani Ortiz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Every principle of emergency management I learned at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> found its practical application in coordinating relief efforts, assisting with community needs, and assuring the well-being of the affected individuals,&rdquo; Ortiz said. &ldquo;It was about ensuring people had what they needed when they needed it the most. That would not have been possible without all the donors\u2019 support.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz was one of the featured student speakers at the He Lei Mahalo &#8211; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Scholarship Luncheon on September 29, which drew about 100 students, donors, supporters, administrators, faculty and staff. Presented by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation, the event celebrated the donors who made generous gifts to support student scholarships at the campus, and also honored the recipients.<\/p>\n<h2>$17 million in scholarships<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation Vice President for Development Karla Zarate-Ramirez shared that last year, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> distributed about $17 million to 5,000 students throughout all 10 campuses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thanks to the generosity from our donors in this room and the ones who could not make it here today, last year we awarded almost $400,000 to 116 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students,&rdquo; Zarate-Ramirez said. &ldquo;And this year we\u2019re on track to award even more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Dr. Rockne C. Freitas Scholarship at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Among the donors in attendance was Makai Freitas, representing the Dr. Rockne C. Freitas Scholarship at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. Freitas is the son of the late former chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Dad felt that education was a path forward,&rdquo; Freitas said. &ldquo;I think he felt that that was a key component in the advancement of our local people, Native Hawaiians in particular.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184603\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184603\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-bing-s-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman\u02bbs headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-bing-s-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-bing-s-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/west-oahu-scholarship-luncheon-bing-s.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184603\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shayna Bing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the luncheon, Freitas sat at a table alongside <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> student Shayna Bing, a recipient of the Dr. Rockne C. Freitas Scholarship at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, as well as other scholarships, including the Charles R. Hemenway Scholarship &#8211; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Fund, the Joshua Hagi Armacost Endowed Scholarship, and the Osher Reentry Scholarship &#8211; University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These scholarships truly give me a second chance in life to rewrite the course of who I am,&rdquo; said Bing, a mother of three. &ldquo;Having the time and financial support to learn new skills, while I have personal and professional development, expands my career opportunities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Bing is double majoring in sociology and psychology, and pursuing a double certification in Hawaiian and Indigenous health and healing, and substance abuse and addictions studies. She plans to graduate in spring 2025, and hopes to earn a doctorate to become a pediatric clinical psychologist.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When you change one person\u2019s trajectory in a positive direction, their reach brings along their acquaintances, their friends, their <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> and their immediate community,&rdquo; Bing said. &ldquo;Providing these financial seeds of hope contribute to not only one life changing, but the larger growth of our <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> people and the overarching health of our future generations here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Full circle<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Alumni Association Vice President David Dinh attended the event as a representative for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
