(Photo credit: Jeff Kuwabara)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every curve and every angle of a coral colony holds the key to sustaining an array of marine species, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> public impact research. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo graduate student Sofia Ferreira led a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-023-38138-1\">published study in <em>Nature<\/em><\/a> on predicting how coral reefs in Guam influence habitat complexity.<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira, who hails from Paraguay, and marine scientists from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo analyzed data collected from overseas in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/themegalab.org\/\">Multiscale Environmental Graphical Analysis Laboratory<\/a>, or MEGA Lab, which specializes in the study of coral reefs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183765\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-coral-colony-shape-size-impact-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"coral diagram\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-coral-colony-shape-size-impact-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-coral-colony-shape-size-impact-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-coral-colony-shape-size-impact-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Images of studied coral.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Underneath the shimmering waves, coral reefs flourish as underwater cities, carefully designed by nature\u2019s architects, corals themselves,&rdquo; said Ferreira. &ldquo;Much like architects design unique houses for different people, corals create diverse habitats and refuge for the ocean\u2019s inhabitants. This diversity within coral refuges is the foundation to the health and resilience of coral reef ecosystems.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ferreira worked on the study alongside researchers at MEGA Lab. She is enrolled in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/tcbes.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">tropical conservation biology and environmental science program<\/a> and earned a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mare.hawaii.edu\/\">bachelor of science in marine science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/datasci.uhh.hawaii.edu\/index.html\">certificate in data science<\/a> from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Reef city<\/h2>\n<p>Ferreira\u2019s teams\u2019 research sought to determine how the design of each coral home shapes a &ldquo;reef city.&rdquo; Using high-tech underwater cameras, Ferreira and fellow MEGA Lab researchers mapped 208 coral reef sites surrounding the island of Guam. The team used <abbr>3D<\/abbr> photogrammetry techniques to survey the plots. From these reef maps, more than 12,000 corals were individually assessed, capturing their size and growth shape.
