Photo by: Hawai\u02bbi State Department of Education<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is offering full scholarships to every Lahainaluna; High School (<abbr>LHS<\/abbr>) senior that will cover tuition, fees, books and supplies for full-time and part-time students at any of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>\u2019s 10 campuses. This initial commitment to the Lahainaluna; Class of 2024 is for one academic year while Âé¶¹´«Ã½seeks external or internal funding to extend these scholarships for a full two or four years of college, depending on the campus the student attends.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UPDATE<\/strong>: October 20, 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/20\/uh-lahainaluna-scholarship-extended\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> scholarship offer to Lahainaluna High seniors extended to two or four years<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Lahainaluna senior class, about 190 students total, was notified about the scholarships at a class assembly on Monday, September 18, at the school\u2019s temporary location at <span aria-label=\"Kulanihakoi\">K&#363;lanih&#257;ko&#699;i<\/span> High School in Kihei. <abbr>LHS<\/abbr> was forced to relocate to <span aria-label=\"Kulanihakoi\">K&#363;lanih&#257;ko&#699;i<\/span> following the deadly August 8 wildfire that destroyed most of Lahaina town.  <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183661\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/lahainaluna_students-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Lahainaluna students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/lahainaluna_students-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/lahainaluna_students-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/lahainaluna_students.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by: Hawai\u02bbi State Department of Education<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We are deeply grateful to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for providing our seniors with the opportunity to pursue higher education without having to worry about tuition and other costs. This means so much to our <span aria-label=\"ohana,\">&#699;ohana,<\/span> and we look forward to our Lunas taking advantage of <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8216;s generous support,&rdquo; Lahainaluna Principal Richard Carosso said.<\/p>\n<p>In attendance from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> for the announcement were President David Lassner, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College Chancellor Lui Hokoana, Vice Chancellor Kulamanu Ishihara, and Dean Laura Nagle as well as Maui Regents Lauren Akitake and Ernest Wilson. Deputy Superintendent Tammi Chun of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education also attended.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The seniors of Lahainaluna High School faced COVID in their freshman year, and now they and their families face unimaginable challenges around loss of <span aria-label=\"ohana,\">&#699;ohana,<\/span> homes, jobs and personal treasures,&rdquo; said Lassner. &ldquo;We are extending these scholarship offers to create at least one bright spot for these students and their families, to help them see a path forward to a better future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">More on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/10\/how-to-help-maui-ohana-affected-by-wildfires\/\">help Maui <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/maui-wildfires\/\">Maui wildfires<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since many <abbr>LHS<\/abbr> students moved or made alternate educational plans, the scholarship offer is available to every student who was enrolled as a senior at <abbr>LHS<\/abbr> on August 7, 2023 regardless of where they are enrolled for this academic year. The university will work closely with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education and <abbr>LHS<\/abbr> to make the process of receiving the scholarship as easy as possible for students and their families. More details will be provided in the coming weeks including contact information for assistance, a webpage with Frequently Asked Questions and other resources.<\/p>\n<p>This scholarship program is in addition to the extensive support <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is already providing to all current <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students from Maui who were impacted by the fires. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is also looking at how to support future Maui graduates who were impacted by the fires in their higher education journeys.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The hearts of all of us at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> go out to all who have suffered through this disaster,&rdquo; said Lassner. &ldquo;We know the hurt will never be gone.
