The three-year grant partners the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Health Systems Corporation <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> District Health Office and the broader Garden Isle healthcare community as they aim to break down barriers in accessing care by establishing new residency programs in rural communities. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_145665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-145665\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-jabsom-exterior-sign-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"jabsom exterior sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-145665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-jabsom-exterior-sign-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-jabsom-exterior-sign-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/manoa-jabsom-exterior-sign.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-145665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Currently, the 233 residents and fellows in 18 specialties sponsored by <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s Graduate Medical Education enterprise train almost exclusively on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. The proposed rural-track curriculum would now provide a cohort with more than 60&#37; of the family medicine residency training on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> once the program is approved by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. <\/p>\n<p>The program, which embeds more interdisciplinary training opportunities with public health than many existing family medicine residencies, will strengthen and grow the health workforce, which will eventually make it easier for <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> families to access care. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Family medicine physicians care for entire families, from the youngest children to the k\u016bpuna,&rdquo; said Allen Hixon, chair of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/familymedicine.jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Family Medicine and Community Health<\/a>, and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health chief of academic family medicine. &ldquo;With the ongoing shortage of primary care physicians, especially in rural areas, this federal grant provides an incredible opportunity for <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> to partner with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, the state Department of Health and the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>community to train the next generation of family medicine physicians on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>Under the new initiative, a cohort of residents of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s Family Medicine Program will spend their first year training at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health and other clinical sites on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Their second and third years of residency will be spent training primarily at Wilcox Health on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We value our relationship with the John A. Burns School of Medicine as we work together with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to create a pipeline for future physicians on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Jen Chahanovich, president and <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of Wilcox Medical Center and <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Clinic. &ldquo;The family medicine residents will gain valuable experience and knowledge while training in a rural setting side-by-side with our providers. These residents are the future of health care and we hope to inspire them to continue their careers on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>According to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Health, the entire state, outside of Honolulu, is designated as a primary medical Health Professional Shortage Area. Physician shortages, poverty and geographic isolation contribute to lack of access to care and poorer health outcomes for those in rural areas. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are very grateful to <abbr>HRSA<\/abbr> for awarding this grant and recognizing the health workforce needs of rural <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; Hixon said. <\/p>\n<p>This funding through the planning grant may be used to support accreditation costs, curriculum development, faculty recruitment and retention, resident recruitment activities and consultation services to support program development.
