Burns School of Medicine\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Training Track.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an effort to address the physician shortage on the neighbor islands, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>&#8216;s (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Training Track was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/15\/jabsom-10m-gift\/\">launched in 2022<\/a> thanks to private funding. This month, the second cohort of the program started their training on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>. The students kicked off their program with meeting leaders of the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> healthcare community at an event held at The Plantation House by Gaylords on August 18.<\/p>\n<p>The program is funded by a $10 million commitment from Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg to help directly improve the health and wellness of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s families, today and in the future.<\/p>\n<p>This second annual event was an opportunity for the six first-year medical students to meet the island\u2019s healthcare partners and to hear from a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/23\/kauai-med-training-track-launch\/\">inaugural cohort<\/a>, which is starting its second year in the innovative program.<\/p>\n<p>The second cohort\u2019s first-year medical students are: Nicole Hada, Zackary Kon, Nikki Ooka, Kennedy-Kain Tamashiro, Darcy Tokunaga and Heather Zimmerman.<\/p>\n<p>Through the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Medical Training Track, six <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> students, with ties to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> or another neighbor island and\/or a strong interest in rural health, are accepted into the program each year.
