Both are part of critical surveys <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> land stewards conduct on Maunakea each year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Participation in restoration initiatives like w&#275;kiu bug monitoring fosters a sense of connection to not only the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land) here but the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> from my own homeland back in Pohnpei and Samoa,&rdquo; said Porter. &ldquo;In a broader sense, it allows people to contribute to the preservation of ecosystems, the protection of endangered species, and the overall health of the environment.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>W&#275;kiu bugs are endemic to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the rare insect\u2019s nysius wekiuicola species can only be found on <span aria-label=\"puu\">pu&#699;u<\/span> (cinder cones) on the summit of Maunakea. This summer\u2019s internship paired him alongside <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> Resource Manager Justin Yeh who also focused on native habitat restoration through the expansion of community volunteer and outreach events.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/hilo-cms-porter-silversword.jpg\" alt=\"Porter planting a silversword\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-181595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/hilo-cms-porter-silversword.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/hilo-cms-porter-silversword-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/hilo-cms-porter-silversword-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Maunakea can serve as a living classroom for students to gain fundamental knowledge in various fields connected to conservation, culture and world-class science,&rdquo; said Yeh. &ldquo;Working directly on the mauna can also provide students with core elements of hard work and discipline.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/30\/silversword-outplanting-volunteer-weed-pulls-maunakea\/\">One of Porter\u2019s many highlights on the mountain was the outplanting of silverswords<\/a>. To assist <abbr>CMS<\/abbr>\u2019 ongoing effort to restore the highly endangered native species, the natural resource intern worked together with a group of volunteers to plant more than 92 silverswords that he helped raise in the greenhouse.
