Works created by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> artists are among the pieces featured which include five <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo alumni and seven faculty from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and Windward Community College.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181412\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-ng.jpg\" alt=\"Person taking off multiple aloha shirts\" width=\"250\" height=\"301\" class=\"size-full wp-image-181412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-ng.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-ng-108x130.jpg 108w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Aloha Wear(y)<\/em> by Brandon Ng<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The exhibit opened on Friday, August 3, and spotlights creations through a diverse mix of media and artistic approaches such as ink jet prints, bronze and wood.<\/p>\n<p>Brightly colored fabrics dotted with vintage-esque <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> scenes of shady palms and pineapple are featured in artist Brandon Ng\u2019s <em>Aloha Wear(y)<\/em> photograph print. Ng, who earned a <abbr>BFA<\/abbr> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/art\/\">Art and Art History<\/a> department at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, exposes hidden and disguised psychological ramifications through art.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019ve often found that when traveling on the continental U.S. and abroad, I have to explain to people why I am not Hawaiian despite being born and raised in the islands,&rdquo; Ng said. &ldquo;Using generic &lsquo;Hawaiian Shirts&rdquo; and tropical fabric motifs as a stand-in for pervasive ideas about paradise, I call attention to the complication of self-identification through the lens of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s nuanced ethnic dynamic.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Dark art<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181413\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-hutchnson-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Woman in Victorian clothing with her legs in a tub holding a birdcage\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-hutchnson-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-hutchnson-98x130.jpg 98w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/system-art-creature-hutchnson.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bessemer Bubbles<\/em> by Katya Lee Hutchinson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Print artist Katya Lee Hutchinson believes her artwork possesses a dark intensity often heavily influenced by literature, examining ideas around escapism, isolation, and social evolution.
