She was the first in her cohort to go on to earn her <abbr>MS<\/abbr> in <abbr>APHN<\/abbr>. Excelling in her studies earned her the Jetta Zimmerman Nursing Consortium Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship that covered the cost of both the Online <abbr>RN<\/abbr> to <abbr>BSN<\/abbr> program and the <abbr>APHN<\/abbr> program. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am committed to advocating patient care and preserving our ethnic, cultural customs to keep families together in good health to ensure a better tomorrow for future generations,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Caring for family members<\/h2>\n<p>Born and raised in Kalihi, the 2012 Farrington High School honors graduate was raised by her single mother and maternal grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019ve always loved caring for my family growing up,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Unfortunately, my family encountered many instances where we had to become caregivers for one another during my upbringing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181127\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181127\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-perez-santos-grandma-217x300.jpeg\" alt=\"perez-santos with her grandmother\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-perez-santos-grandma-217x300.jpeg 217w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-perez-santos-grandma-94x130.jpeg 94w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-perez-santos-grandma.jpeg 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perez-Santos and her grandma after her <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> nursing pinning ceremony.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In middle school, Perez-Santos was a caregiver for her uncle who was diagnosed with cancer.  <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Following his surgery to remove the tumor from his leg, I was the only one who could stomach changing the bandages of a deep open wound, which I was taught how to do by some fantastic nurses at The Queen\u2019s Medical Center\u2019s oncology unit. For weeks, I changed my uncle\u2019s bandage until it eventually healed,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her uncle passed away the following year, but earlier he told the nurses, &ldquo;Kiana\u2019s going to be one nurse like you guys!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This gave me confidence in myself and helped me realize that I wanted to become something in healthcare,&rdquo; Perez-Santos said. <\/p>\n<p>She later cared for her grandfather until he passed away in 2016. Shortly after, she began caring for her grandmother and moved in with her prior to starting the nursing program at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Today, she is 91 years young with some chronic health issues, including Parkinson\u2019s but is doing well,&rdquo; Perez-Santos said. <\/p>\n<h2>Scholarship support<\/h2>\n<p>Perez-Santos is grateful for all the opportunities the scholarship has provided, including being able to focus on studies without the stress over finances.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Their generious gift forever changed my life!<br \/>&#8212;Kiana Perez-Santos<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;This gift has allowed me to care for my grandma and go to school full-time without having to worry about working full-time to pay for everything,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I can only imagine what it would have been like to balance it all.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>She added, &ldquo;I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the Jetta Zimmerman Foundation and board members. Their generous gift forever changed my life! Mahalo to everyone at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing for their continuous support during my academic endeavors.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Bringing awareness to disease prevention<\/h2>\n<p>Close to earning her <abbr>APHN<\/abbr> master\u2019s degree in a couple weeks, Perez-Santos plans to apply for new graduate program positions for registered nurses at hospitals in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to gain bedside nursing experience and improve her skills.
