The book includes a chapter by faculty from the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant), <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cte.hawaii.edu\/\">Center for Teaching Excellence<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/kuahawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kuaaina\">Kua&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> Ulu <span aria-label=\"Auamo.\">&#699;Auamo.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The chapter &ldquo;<em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i:<\/span><\/em> a Kanaka <span aria-label=\"Oiwicentered\">&#699;&#332;iwi-centered<\/span> Indigenist axiology for conducting research with communities,&rdquo; examines the nuances and complexities of community-researcher partnerships and details the process used to develop written guidelines (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/kulana-noii\/\">K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/a><\/em>) that help ensure reciprocal, place-based research in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½. It stresses the importance of Indigenist ethics, which require that all who engage with <em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> take the rights of Indigenous peoples as the highest priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181050\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181050\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-book-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"book cover\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-book-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-book-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-book.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ignite book cover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The authors of the chapter, Rosie <span aria-label=\"Anolani\">&#699;Anolani<\/span> Alegado and Katy Hintzen from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Sea Grant\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/ulana-ike\/\">Ulana <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Center of Excellence<\/a>; Brenda Asuncion and Miwa Tamanaha from <span aria-label=\"Kuaaina\">Kua&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> Ulu <span aria-label=\"Auamo\">&#699;Auamo;<\/span> and Daniela Bottjer-Wilson from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Center for Teaching Excellence, initially envisioned <em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> out of a need expressed in the <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> (traditional land division extending from the mountain to the sea) of <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span> for a set of guidelines to help ensure that research projects in this area engage in equitable and reciprocal partnerships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> is rooted in the collective knowledge, insight and many years of effort contributed by communities, organizations and experts across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,&rdquo; said Alegado. &ldquo;We co-developed as <em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> is a starting point for deeper conversations between researchers and community partners that when applied along with hard work, may lead to more just and generative relationships.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Community-based ethical research training<\/h2>\n<p>Since <em>K&#363;lana <span aria-label=\"Noii\">Noi&#699;i<\/span><\/em> was first released, more than 600 researchers, community members and resource stewards have been trained through more than 40 workshops on building and nurturing pilina (relationships) and <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> aku, <span aria-label=\"ao\">a&#699;o<\/span> mai \/ Aloha aku, aloha mai (knowledge given, knowledge received \/ Love given, love received).
