She was recently awarded the National Institutes of Health (<abbr>NIH<\/abbr>) K99 Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (<abbr>MOSAIC) grant, which enhances diversity within the academic biomedical research workforce through its support of promising postdocs into research faculty positions. <\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the grant, she is one step closer to reaching her long-term goal of attaining a faculty position in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to directly assess and improve the impact of <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> programs, particularly for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. <\/p>\n<h2>Finding community at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <\/h2>\n<p>Hosoda has more than 10 years of experience in Indigenous <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> program development, implementation and analysis from her time at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/p>\n<p>She credits <abbr>UH<\/abbr> not only for its high-level academic courses but also for helping her develop a strong community of Native Hawaiians in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>. During her nine years as a student, she earned her PhD in <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">communication and information sciences<\/a>, her <abbr title=\"master of science\">MS<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/mbbe\/\">molecular biosciences and biological engineering<\/a> and her <abbr title=\"bachelor of science\">BS<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/lifesciences\/undergraduate\/biology-undergraduate-programs\/\">biology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kawaihuelani.org\/\">Hawaiian language<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180950\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180950\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-kelsea-group-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"group holding up sign\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-kelsea-group-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-kelsea-group-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-kelsea-group.jpeg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hosoda leads a team to expose K-12 students to coding applied to the Hawaiian language.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa was a great place for me to deepen my knowledge in both sciences and <span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian knowledge) and influenced my research goal to further the science of mentorship and multicultural identity integration,&rdquo; said Hosoda.<\/p>\n<p>Early in her college career, she became part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/hawaii.edu\/nhsemp\/\/\">Native Hawaiian Science &#38; Engineering Mentorship Program<\/a> (<abbr>NHSEMP<\/abbr>). &ldquo;It provided a much-needed community of support to navigate through my biology degree and also maintain ties with the Native Hawaiian community through opportunities like tutoring at \u0100nuenue Hawaiian Immersion school and going on <span aria-label=\"huakai\">huaka&#699;i<\/span> (learning journeys) to <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span>,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>As part of <abbr>NHSEMP<\/abbr>, Hosoda attended the American Indian Science and Engineering (<abbr>AISES<\/abbr>) national conference and was impressed. &ldquo;I was enamored by how Indigenous knowledge and sciences were seen in harmony through its council of elders, presentations and <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> industry partners.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180964\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180964\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-eco-group-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"hosoda with group on hiking trail\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-eco-group-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-eco-group-130x73.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-hosoda-eco-group.jpeg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">M\u0101lama <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> work with <abbr>NHSEMP<\/abbr> students applying engineering skills to maintain hiking trails.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Encouraged by what she learned, she worked with <abbr>NHSEMP<\/abbr> to co-found the first <abbr>AISES<\/abbr> chapter at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Today, the chapter has grown in membership and involvement in the community.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Hosoda served as program manager for both <abbr>NHSEMP<\/abbr> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/maile\/wp\/\">Maile Mentoring Bridge Program<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, and helped support students in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> majors through mentorship, cultural programming, career development, research experiences and more. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s thrilling that Native Hawaiian scholars such as Dr. Hosoda are being recognized and being funded by the <abbr>NIH<\/abbr> for research that centers culturally-relevant evaluation methods in biomedical training,&rdquo; said Rosie Alegado, associate professor of oceanography and one of Hosoda\u2019s mentors who served on her PhD dissertation committee. &ldquo;This award supports the completion of Dr. Hosoda\u2019s postdoctoral training and her transition to an independent faculty position, and it would be a coup for Âé¶¹´«Ã½to get her back.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Researching kindness and biomedical career pathways<\/h2>\n<p>At <abbr>UCSF<\/abbr>, Hosoda is working on two projects that focus on the science of mentorship, diversity and longitudinal quantitative program evaluation. The Social Influence of Kindness project examines how people give and receive kindness. Her quantitative research found that kindness is significant in promoting well-being, reducing stress and identifying as a member of one\u2019s defined institution.<\/p>\n<p>Her second project, Scaling Up Biomedical Career Pathway Programs, works in collaboration with other institutions and builds on a previous study to increase the number of Indigenous <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> faculty at universities across the nation.
