In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant) was awarded &#36;400,000 to collaborate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/energy.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Energy Office<\/a> (<abbr>HSEO<\/abbr>) to inform the state\u2019s energy future. The project team will work to build trusted, long-term relationships with the remote communities most impacted by energy grid fragility and in need of multiple options for making the energy transition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our team aims to help communities approach renewable energy in the overall context of hazard and emergency preparedness, rather than as a stand-alone issue. We are looking forward to building on existing outreach programs to further build individual community resilience,&rdquo; said Amy Wirts, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s coastal lands program coordinator and one of the project leads on the grant.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.noaa.gov\/\">National Sea Grant College Program<\/a> (Sea Grant), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s (<abbr>DOE<\/abbr>) Water Power Technologies Office, is supporting projects in Alaska, Guam and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> that will examine how adoption of ocean renewable energy could support sustainable energy systems. Nationwide, Sea Grant and <abbr>DOE<\/abbr> recommended three projects for a total of &#36;800,000 to conduct community engagement activities that will help illuminate community values, perceptions and cultural contexts around energy innovation and resilience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180851\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180851\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-400K-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing at information table\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-180851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-400K-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-400K-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-sea-grant-400K.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180851\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>HSEO<\/abbr> conducts community outreach.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By placing communities at the center of technology advancement efforts and gleaning on-the-ground information about local, place-based energy transitions, the results of these projects will be critical to helping inform <abbr>DOE<\/abbr> programmatic efforts that catalyze innovative energy solutions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is critical to support these communities as they engage in the process of identifying, planning and developing the local clean energy resources that meet their long-term needs,&rdquo; said Jonathan Pennock, director of Sea Grant. &ldquo;Sea Grant is excited to partner with <abbr>DOE<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/water\/water-power-technologies-office\">Water Power Technologies Office<\/a> to assist communities in effectively engaging with emerging energy technologies intended to secure a sustainable, resilient and equitable future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Community-based energy planning<\/h2>\n<p>The projects\u2019 overall goal is to develop information pathways and build trusted relationships, and to support community-based energy planning to unlock ocean energy development. The three main elements of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> project are: (1) expand the existing <abbr>HSEO<\/abbr> Energize K&#257;kou community engagement program to include ocean energy and rural communities; (2) further develop the <abbr>HSEO<\/abbr> Clean Energy Wayfinders outreach program; and (3) build capacity for community and local organizations to directly engage with underserved communities to support energy transition.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean energy systems can harness energy from the power of ocean waves, tides and currents, or even the differences in salt levels, temperatures and pressure.
