The National Endowment for the Humanities\u2019 chair is advised by the National Council on the Humanities, a board of 26 distinguished private citizens appointed by the president and confirmed by the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Senate. The National Council members serve staggered six-year terms.<\/p>\n<p>Sing is currently a managing partner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educational-prism.com\/\">Educational Prism<\/a>, <abbr>LLC<\/abbr>, a \u200b<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>-based, Hawaiian-owned education consultant company serving educational leaders at schools, universities and education centers specializing in Native Hawaiian students and Native Hawaiian education.<\/p>\n<p>Sing started out at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo in 1974 as a counselor for Pacific Island students. He went on to become founding executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.maui.hawaii.edu\/na-pua-noeau-native-hawaiian-k12-enrichment#:~:text=N%C4%81%20Pua%20No'eau%20is,in%20their%20home%2Dbased%20schools.\">N&#257; Pua <span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children<\/a> (K&#8211;12), based at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo for decades and still one of the most important programs in Native Hawaiian education in the state. The program was later expanded to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;David was my mentor when I was hired at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo nearly 37 years ago. He also served in that role for many other young Native Hawaiian professionals who worked at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo beginning in the 1980s,&rdquo; said Gail Makuak\u0101ne-Lundin, former director of <a href=\"https:\/\/kipuka.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">K&#299;puka Native Hawaiian Student Center<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo. Those professionals included Ginger Hamilton, student support, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, retired; Manu Meyer, student affairs, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>; Kamuela Chun, academic affairs, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges; Kinohi Gomes, program director, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Na Pua <span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span>; and Lui Hokoana, chancellor, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He organized the first Native Hawaiian Council for faculty and staff on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo campus, the Committee of Faculty of Hawaiian Ancestry and he established the Hawaiian Leadership Development Program in 1984, which today is the K&#299;puka Native Hawaiian Student Center,&rdquo; said Makuak&#257;ne-Lundin.<\/p>\n<p>Sing also developed Ke Ola Mau Health Pathways for Native Hawaiian students, a career-path program for students attending either <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo or <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa majoring or intending to major in a health field. And he mobilized Native Hawaiian education caucus groups, creating a voice for Native Hawaiian education to be heard through grassroots venues such as the Native Hawaiian Education Association and the Hawaiian Leadership Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Sing was the first Native Hawaiian voted to the Board of the National Indian Education Association. He was awarded the National Indian Education Association Educator of the Year Award in 2008 and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
