{"id":180035,"date":"2023-07-10T10:29:04","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T20:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=180035"},"modified":"2023-07-10T10:29:04","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T20:29:04","slug":"qs-rankings-by-subject","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/07\/10\/qs-rankings-by-subject\/","title":{"rendered":"5 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa programs among nation\u2019s top 20"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-miro-qsrankings.jpg\" alt=\"group of students pose for a photo\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-112486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-miro-qsrankings.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-miro-qsrankings-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-miro-qsrankings-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More than 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> subject areas earned international honors, including a top 10 national performance by the <a href=\"http:\/\/ling.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Linguistics<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topuniversities.com\/subject-rankings\/2023\">2023 Quacquarelli Symonds (<abbr>QS<\/abbr>) World University Rankings by Subject<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa placed in the nation\u2019s top 20 and the world\u2019s top 100 in five narrow subject areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Linguistics: <abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 10 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 19 worldwide<\/li>\n<li>Anthropology: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 18 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;100 worldwide<\/li>\n<li>Geophysics: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 19 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 44 worldwide<\/li>\n<li>Geology: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 19 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 44 worldwide<\/li>\n<li>Earth and marine sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 20 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;100 worldwide<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s flagship campus ranked in 17 other narrow subject areas, all in the nation\u2019s top 100.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa also received the following broad subject area rankings: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/arthum\/\">arts and humanities<\/a> (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 33 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 125 worldwide), <a href=\"https:\/\/natsci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">natural sciences<\/a> (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 50 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 225 worldwide), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">social sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/majors\/management\">management<\/a> (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 71 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 393 worldwide), and <a href=\"https:\/\/lifesciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">life sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">medicine<\/a> (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 100 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 400 worldwide).<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>-based <abbr>QS<\/abbr> is considered one of the most highly regarded ranking entities in higher education. <abbr>QS<\/abbr> selected 1,594 institutions to evaluate out of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.com\/universities-colleges\/university-statistics\">more than 25,000 colleges and universities<\/a> for its 2023 World University Rankings by Subject using the following factors: academic and employer reputation, research citations per paper, international research network and the h-index, which measures the productivity and impact of an academic researcher or department.<\/p>\n<h2>International recognition<\/h2>\n<p>These rankings are the latest in a series of high marks from <abbr>QS<\/abbr>.
